The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
One of the most diverse classes in Technion history received their Ph.D. diplomas on May 24. Approximately 43% of the 199 new graduates are women, a record, and a significant increase over previous years. Most of the graduates (124) are native Israeli, with the rest hailing from all over the world, including the U.S., Canada, France, Austria, Ukraine, Uruguay, Italy, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, India, and China. Most graduates had numerous mentors, a nod to the increasingly multidisciplinary approach to research and education across campus. This trend is reflected in the research of Dr. Gil Wang of the Faculty of Civil…
PTC (NASDAQ: PTC) has entered into a long-term strategic collaboration agreement with the Technion under which PTC will establish a Research & Development center and invest $5 million into Technion’s Haifa campus. Under the terms of the agreement, PTC and Technion will jointly research and upgrade learning processes relating to advanced manufacturing technology. PTC’s Haifa development center will relocate to the Technion under the leadership of Dr. Michael Reitman. PTC has also allocated an annual budget for joint research in industrial IoT, augmented reality, simulation, and generative design. The allocation supports Technion faculty by providing software products; awarding scholarships and…
Featuring Professors Graham de Ruiter, Daniel Orenstein, and Ester Segal Our planet’s natural resources will become more strained in the coming decades, and the Technion is hard at work to address the crisis. In this discussion, learn about the wide range of solutions to build a more sustainable world: From 3D-printed steak to studying the […]
Read a special message from Professor Uri Sivan, President of the Technion. This coming Thursday, we celebrate Yom Ha’Atzmaut (Independence Day), marking the 73rd anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel. Yom Ha’Atzmaut is preceded by Yom HaZikaron, the Day of Remembrance for all those who gave their lives in the defense of Israel. I cannot think of any other country that places side by side a solemn day of memory with a day of total celebration, acting as a sober reminder that Independence comes at a price. The two loud, ear-piercing sirens that ring through Israel’s streets…
Pictured above: Students return to campus. The Technion campus opened for the 2021 spring semester on Sunday, March 21, using a model of hybrid teaching – a combination of online and frontal teaching – in accordance with the Ministry of Health’s restrictions and “green” guidelines. After a challenging year of online study, students who pre-registered and presented a vaccine certificate were able to begin returning to classrooms, campuses, and frontal learning. The Technion buildings and faculties were well prepared for the students’ return. The security unit has assigned bouncers, security guards, scouts, and certified COVID-19 inspectors on the isolated campus…
The American National Academy of Engineering (NAE) announced the admission this month of 106 new members and 23 international (non-American) members, including Dr. Yoelle Maarek, who earned her doctorate from the Henry and Marilyn Taub Faculty of Computer Science at the Technion. She is now Vice President of Research at Alexa Shopping at Amazon. Dr. Maarek is being recognized by the NAE for her “contributions to online information retrieval and data management, and leadership in applied industrial research.” After completing her undergraduate studies in engineering from the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris, Dr. Maarek went on to…
Industrial design, metallurgy and music — yes, music — all came together in this unique student project. Anastasia Kolomiets, a master’s student in the Technion Faculty of Architecture, designed and manufactured the first-ever titanium flute made with 3D-printing. This elegant recorder was honored with a photo in Wohlers Report, often referred to as the “bible” of 3D printing, and also placed third in the GE-Arcam UGM Competition 2019 for “Best Creative part.”
The European Union recently recognized Dr. Netanel Korin of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering and Professor Emanuel Milman of the Faculty of Mathematics with prestigious ERC Consolidator Grants totaling about $4.5 million. The Technion professors were selected from an initial pool of 2,453 researchers, then narrowed to 301 winners. Allocated by Horizon 2020, the biggest EU research and innovation program ever, the grants honored scientists with a focus on pioneering research, including multidisciplinary projects. Dr. Korin won for developing technology to treat brain aneurysms, weakened areas in a blood vessel of the brain that can rupture and cause brain damage…
Former Technion President, Distinguished Professor Yitzhak Apeloig will receive the prestigious 2021 Schrodinger Medal of the World Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists (WATOC). Prof. Apeloig, who served as Technion president from 2001 until 2009, is being honored for his seminal computational and experimental contributions to silicone chemistry and organic chemistry. The medal is awarded each year to a single scientist whose impact on theoretical and computational chemistry is particularly outstanding. Past recipients of this honor include four Chemistry Nobel Prize winners and many of the most influential scientists of computational quantum chemistry. Prof. Apeloig, who is a member of…
Donor Rosalyn August’s Girls Empowerment Mission One female scientist traced her inspiration to watching X-Men use their superhuman powers for peace. Others talked about being nerds in high school, or life as women in science. They shared their stories at the Technion 6th Tech Women event, which had plenty of real-life women superheroes, including event […]
Distinguished Professor Emeritus Jacob Ziv recently received one of science’s most prestigious awards — the 2021 International Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Medal of Honor. The medal is awarded to a single person each year for exceptional contributions to science and technology. Technion Prof. Ziv of the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Faculty of Computer and Electrical Engineering is the first Israeli to have won this honor. Anyone who routinely shares emails and photos on the internet, experiences the unparalleled daily impact of Prof. Ziv’s contributions. His Lempel-Ziv Data Compression Algorithm, developed with Technion Professor Abraham Lempel, serves as…
