The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) has selected Israeli researcher Alon Gany to receive its prestigious Wyld Propulsion Award for 2025. Gany was recognized for his “pioneering contributions to the study of propulsion using metal-containing fuels, energetic materials, hybrid rockets, ramjet and scramjet engines, and for excellence in educating generations of propulsion experts.” “It’s exciting and gratifying to receive this international recognition,” Gany told the Davidson Institute website. Those who have received this award in the past are among the best in the field, and this recognition is truly at the highest level.” Gany, 80, is Professor Emeritus…
A startup – MOZAICO — that has grown out of research at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in the northern city of Haifa seeks to boost coastal power, and desalination plant efficiency and cost-effectiveness, by removing limescale and other marine debris from cooling systems without harmful chemicals while absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to help fight global warming. MOZAICO is developing a two-stage pilot under the supervision of Prof. Charlotte Vogt and her Vogt Laboratory of Catalysis for Fuels of the Future at the Technion. The Dutch-born Vogt, 32, was included in Forbes’ “30 under 30” list…
A recent study led by researchers at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine says it is now possible to predict within three days of whiplash injury, which patients will develop chronic pain, based on cross “talk” between regions of the brain and a person’s anxiety level after the injury. The findings, published in in Nature Mental Health, were from a large-scale longitudinal look at whiplash patients to identify predictors of the transition from acute to chronic pain. The research—a collaboration between the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, and the McGill University—found that the more the hippocampus, the…
Researchers at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology have created new materials that could improve magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology. In turn, this could lead to advancements in disease detection and potentially reduce the need for some radiation-based diagnostic procedures. The research team used a novel methodology called MMV (matrix magnetization vehicles), which uses engineered materials to enhance the detection of metabolites, small molecules that can indicate various health conditions. The MMV method increases the magnetic resonance signal strength by about four orders of magnitude, and extends the duration of the enhanced signal to approximately 10 minutes, compared to…
Israeli medical diagnostic company MeMed has announced the successful completion of the first randomized controlled trial in the US of its test to differentiate between bacterial and viral infections. The test could reduce the amount of use of antibiotics, which do not work on viral infections but whose prescription for them plays a part in the growing problem of antibiotic resistance in bacteria. The company says the trial of the MeMed BV test successfully demonstrates its clinical utility in promoting appropriate antibiotic use, highlighting its potential to improve patient outcomes and healthcare decision making. It also called the trial a…
Taking race into account when developing tools to predict a patient’s risk of colorectal cancer leads to more accurate predictions when compared with race-blind algorithms, researchers find. While many medical researchers have argued that race should be removed as a factor from clinical algorithms that predict disease risks, a new study finds that, at least for colorectal cancer, including race can help correct a data issue – inaccurate recording of family history for Black patients. Having relatives with colorectal cancer is a known risk factor for the disease, but Black patients are less likely to have an accurate recorded history…
Israeli agritech startup Nanovel has unveiled its new AI-powered autonomous robot capable of picking fruit off the trees for the fresh market. The company says the robot offers a worldwide solution to farm labor shortages and rapidly increasing costs, the two most pressing issues identified in a survey by the Western Growers organization, which works with farmers in Arizona, California, Colorado and New Mexico. According to Nanovel, the robot is the world’s first-of-its-kind system designed to pick citrus fruit in dense foliage, involving a high level of technological complexity, including advanced edge computing and AI-driven data analysis. The system includes…
The Biomed company Epitomee’s share value spiked this month (188%) after its new weight loss pill was approved by the FDA. The pill, which inherited its company’s name will join the fierce competition between weight loss pills in the market. In complete contrast to Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro, Epitomee’s capsule does not contain any active substance. It is a sophisticated pill that, after being swallowed and arriving at its intended destination, expands and changes its shape into a rigid triangle, in response to the acidic environment. In doing so, it mimics the presence of solid food, which…
New materials developed by researchers at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology are expected to significantly improve the performance of MRI scans, helping with early diagnosis for a range of diseases and reducing the need for some radiation-intensive tests. An MRI – or magnetic resonance imaging – is a noninvasive procedure used by clinicians to get an image of what is happening inside a person’s body, including their organs, bones and blood vessels. But one of the limitations of conventional MRI devices is that they struggle to detect metabolites – small molecules involved in the body’s chemical processes –…
In the year since the horrific and devastating attacks of October 7, 2023, our world has completely changed. More than one thousand Israelis lost their lives that day – a tragedy that we will never forget. As we reflect and hope for the hostages’ safe return, one thing has become clear: Israeli resilience has never been stronger. As people around Israel woke up to a new reality on October 8, 2023, so too did the students and staff at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. To commemorate this tragic anniversary and honor the bravery of all those called to…
Israeli startup H2OLL has launched its first complete system to produce high-quality and affordable water from the air. The system was installed at the Wadi Attir initiative in the Negev, a groundbreaking project led by Israel’s Bedouin community to create a model of sustainable farming. H2OLL’s technology started as a project by Eran Friedler and David Broday, two professors from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. They were joined by Dr. Khaled Gommed from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering as they sought to find ways to provide clean drinking…
Children and teenagers with pneumonia seem to spend less time in hospital if they are visited by a medical clown, who helps to reduce their heart rates and encourage independence. Visits from a medical clown, who may help children role-play or distract them during treatments, have previously been linked to reduced stress and anxiety among young people in hospital. Now, Karin Yaacoby-Bianu at the Carmel Medical Center in Haifa, Israel, and her colleagues have specifically studied their effect among children who were hospitalised with pneumonia, which is inflammation of the lungs. The team randomly assigned 26 children and teenagers, aged…
