When war took him from the classroom to the battlefield, one Technion student’s future changed in an instant. After a devastating injury in Gaza, a lifesaving lung transplant, and months of recovery, he returned to the Technion determined to rebuild his life.
On October 8, 2023, just one day after Hamas attacked Israel, Y. was called away from his studies at the Technion to serve in the IDF reserves. In Gaza, a missile struck his tank, killing a fellow soldier and leaving Y. fighting for his life. His road to recovery would be long and uncertain, marked by a lifesaving lung transplant and months of intensive rehabilitation. But Y. wouldn’t face that journey alone. When he returned to the Technion, faculty, staff, and fellow students rallied around him, offering the support and encouragement he needed to begin rebuilding his life and reclaiming the future that war had threatened to take away.
Three years after October 7, Y.’s experience is a powerful reminder that behind the headlines are real people whose lives have been forever changed. His journey reflects both the devastating human cost of the war and the strength of a community committed to helping its members move forward.

What began as campus protests has hardened into “silent boycotts”—institutional breaks, journal desk rejections, and quiet exclusions from research consortia. Yet, those leading this isolation campaign fail to realize a fundamental truth: cutting ties with Israeli […]
Even through shock and pain, Y. acted with clarity. “I applied a tourniquet to myself and sent a text message to my mom and my girlfriend to say that I was injured.” Y. was eventually flown by helicopter to the hospital, where doctors told him they would need to amputate his leg. “I realized there […]
“I thought it was fake,” she recalled. “There was no chance.” As reports continued to emerge, reality became impossible to ignore. By 7 a.m., L.’s brigade commanders had convened an emergency call. Within 20 minutes, L. had packed her things and was helping mobilize reserve battalions, distribute weapons and equipment, and prepare soldiers to enter […]
