The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Hope Amid Hardship Juggling the demands of reserve service, studies, and personal life have been no small feat for N. “I went straight from war into school,” he recounted. “It wasn’t easy, but the Technion postponed the start of classes, giving us time to settle in.” Despite the challenges, he finds moments of support and […]
Jacob Nagel, a brigadier general who still serves about 80 days a year in the reserves, is one of Israel’s foremost security experts and has served as acting national security adviser. He is also a Technion alum and visiting professor who heads the Technion’s Advanced Defense Research Institute and is a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a nonpartisan research institute based in Washington, D.C. In August 2024, Prof. Nagel was asked by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make recommendations for Israel’s security strategy and budget for the next decade. He formed a committee comprised of 12…
Israeli entrepreneur and investor Shmulik Bezalel has traveled the world and donated funds for research to find a treatment for his son Itay who has low-functioning autism spectrum disorder. Itay is one of 254 million children and adults worldwide struggling with neuropsychiatric disorders without a suitable treatment. Recognizing the limited therapeutic options for neuropsychiatric disorders, Bezalel teamed up with serial entrepreneur Boaz Goldman and neuroscientist Dr. Nisim Perets, and in 2021 founded an Israeli biotech startup with the vision to generate a simulation of the brain and test the efficacy of drugs. That startup, Itay & Beyond — named after…
“Fat is flavor” is a well-known culinary principle. But nutritional research suggests consuming too much animal fat may be a factor in the development of many health conditions from dementia to male infertility to Crohn’s disease. A cutting-edge plant protein-based fat solution, Fatrix, will soon go into commercial production to help food manufacturers reduce total fat and especially saturated fat content. The product’s developer, Israeli food-tech startup Gavan Technologies, has raised $8 million in a Series A round led by MoreVC of Israel with participation from Lever VC; EIT Food, a European Union-supported platform for sustainable food innovations; and DarkBoot…
Israeli clean-tech startup W-Cycle has partnered with Brazilian company Melhoramentos to develop a new compostable food packaging material that fully decomposes within 100 days. The strategic partnership aims to create an ecofriendly alternative to single-use plastics that can withstand extreme temperatures and provide robust food containment. W-Cycle’s proprietary material, SupraPulp, is made from agricultural waste products like sugarcane bagasse, eucalyptus wood fibers and banana leaves. The packaging is oil- and water-resistant and can endure temperatures ranging from minus -40°C to 220°C, making it suitable for freezer-to-oven use without requiring plastic lamination.
Without a crystal ball, it’s impossible to predict with absolute certainty the outcome of any legal process. But AI is getting pretty close. A startup in Israel has developed an algorithm that is currently 85 percent accurate in assessing liability and in predicting how a case will conclude. That number will only increase as the AI handles more cases. “Litigation is a very unknown territory,” says Yariv Lissauer, CEO at Haifa-based Canotera and a former lawyer with vast experience in the startup world. “There are a lot of unknowns, a lot of complications, a lot of regulations and decrees. But…
Maya Sigal first learned about the devastating impact of vehicular traffic on Israel’s wildlife when the pandemic was raging. At the time, she was working in the high-tech sector. After discovering the scope of the problem, she cofounded Safe Wildlife Crossings, an organization working to protect animals from deadly traffic collisions. From cats to dogs to mongooses to hyenas, thousands of animals are killed by cars on Israel’s roads every year, and Safe Wildlife Crossings aims to raise public awareness and encourage government action to prevent roadkill.
The world of dairy farming has come a long way since Anna Baldwen from New Jersey patented her “Hygienic Glove Milker” in 1879. The cows hated it and would often kick over the milk bucket. But her rudimentary handheld mechanized pump heralded a new era in technology. Farmers today are braced for another revolution. Large herds of cows are, for the first time, being milked by robots, thanks to Afimilk, based at Kibbutz Afikim, northern Israel. In 1979, Afimilk launched the world’s first “milk meter” – which measures the yield of each individual cow, senses when the milking is over,…
Let’s all agree on something: birds are great, but not when they’re pooping on our stuff. Obviously, this is true when it comes to windowsills, windshields and birthday parties at the park. But there are two places where our feathered friends are especially unwelcome: the burgeoning industry of water-based floating solar panel sites, and the many pools that make up the fish-farming industry. Here, birds can cause all kinds of trouble, by decreasing solar panel efficiency due to a hearty layer of poop, and by eating fish farmers’ livestock — which is problematic for both the farmers and the livestock…
Among those who received a master’s degree during the Technion’s recent graduation ceremony, was the late Dov (Dovi) Moshe Kogan, z”l. An M.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering was awarded to him posthumously and accepted by his widow, Shaked, his son, and his mother, Chaya. Master Sergeant Dovi Kogan, 32, was deployed to the south on […]
In this episode of the Technion Alumni Go Global podcast, Technion alum Hava Siegelmann – Provost and Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst – talks about things like so-called ‘catastrophic forgetting’ in very smart machines, how robots can help rehabilitate injured soldiers, and even a little bit about baseball. Professor Siegelmann also tells us […]
An Israeli food-tech company, Imagindairy, received approval from the Health Ministry to market its products throughout the country, the company recently announced. Imagindairy, founded in 2020 and headquartered in Haifa, produces sustainable, animal-free dairy proteins that are identical in taste, texture, and nutritional value to cow milk proteins, the statement said. The decision in Israel follows that of the Food and Drug Administration’s approval in the US about one year ago. Dr. Eyal Afergan, the CEO of Imagindairy and a graduate of Israel’s Technion Institute of Technology, said the approval is a significant milestone for the company, and demonstrates the…
