The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Prescription eye drops, while convenient and commonly prescribed, are oftentimes ineffective and can lead to suboptimal eye care and even vision loss if patients do not administer treatment correctly. Eye drops are administered through small bottles that drop medication directly into the eyeball. Now a new device to administer eye medication could revolutionize eye care and abolish the issues associated with traditional eye medicine treatments. Eximore, an ophthalmological drug company led by Technion graduate and CEO Eyal Sheetrit, has created a patented non-invasive plug that is inserted into the tear duct and delivers medication into the eye. The plug is…
In most accidents involving a vehicle and a two-wheeler, the latter almost always ends up in worse shape – but a new device strives to help decrease the frequency of these accidents. Israel-based tech company Autotalks has developed a handlebar device that warns cyclists and scooter riders of the presence of another vehicle close to them. Led by Founder, CTO, and Technion alumnus Onn Haran, Autotalks is determined to make the road a safer place for cyclists, motorists, and scooter riders alike. The new device, called the ZooZ 2, warns cyclists and scooter riders of vehicles approaching their blind spots…
Every day, manufacturing companies face costly equipment failures. What if they could detect that leaky valve before it leaked? Alumni-founded Feelit Technologies Ltd. predicts and solves machinery problems before they happen — preventing potentially dangerous equipment failures and reducing the cost of manual inspections and production downtime associated with finding and fixing faults. Feelit technology is based on sensor-packed stickers printed with nanoparticle ink. When affixed to pipes, pumps, or valves, the sensors monitor pressure, temperature, vibration, leakage, wall integrity, thickness, and other industrial parameters. The data is then analyzed in the cloud in real time and sent back to…
Technion’s Ties to Industry Helped Her Become a Biotech Leader Iris Grossman always thought she’d become a neurologist, but as a Ph.D. candidate at the Technion, she worked closely with Teva Pharmaceuticals and fell in love with personalized medicine. Her expertise in science and analytics has opened doors to high-level positions and consultancies at Teva, GlaxoSmithKline, Eli Lilly, and Takeda, as well as chief scientific officer roles at CAMP4 Therapeutics and Amide Technologies. Currently, she is chief strategy officer at the Israeli-British Eleven Therapeutics. Dr. Grossman, a modern Orthodox mother of four who currently resides in Boston, is part of…
Every so often the Technion is fortunate enough to receive support from parents, children, and even grandchildren of the same family. Since each generation has a different perspective on giving, this multigenerational approach embraces individual motivations and helps ensure continued philanthropy for years to come. Such is the case with Technion graduates Joseph Newman ’67, M.S. ’68, and his son, Amir Neeman MBA ’02. Joseph Newman grew up without means and is now in the position to give back. In July 2021, he made an extremely generous contribution to the Technion as thanks for a scholarship some 50-plus years ago…
Whether lured by Stanford University, tech startups, or California sunshine and cypress trees, many Israelis living in the U.S. have made Silicon Valley a second home. By some estimates, there are upwards of 2,000 Technion alumni in Silicon Valley, many holding senior positions in engineering, operations management, and investment management. “They are making a significant […]
Due to the scarcity of organ donors, many of the nearly 92,000 Americans awaiting kidney donations will not survive the transplant wait list. Now, a collaborative partnership to produce 3D printed kidneys is aimed at reducing wait times in the U.S. and around the world. Israeli-based CollPlant Biotechnologies, led by Technion alum Yechiel Tal ’79, M.S.’82, is working with United Therapeutics Corporation to manufacture artificial kidneys by combining CollPlant’s unique tobacco-based platform with its BioInk technology. In preparation for entering production, the companies have, ironically, turned a former tobacco plant into a modern 3D bioprinting factory. “We are excited to…
The Israeli company Bonus BioGroup, co-founded by Technion alumnus Shai Meretzki, has been given the green light to expand use of its innovative COVID treatment after severely ill patients showed dramatic results earlier this year. Dr. Meretzki earned dual bachelor’s degrees from the Technion in 1996 in both chemical engineering and biology, and his master’s and Ph.D. degrees — also from the Technion — in biotechnology in 1999 and 2002, respectively. Just one day after taking their last dose of Bonus Biogroup’s MesenCure, 10 patients were well enough to be released from Israel’s Rambam Hospital. Chest x-rays showed a drop…
Finding your dream home can be a daunting, exhausting process. With so many listings to sift through, it can feel impossible to find the perfect home. It’s why Asaf Rubin, a Techion alumnus, founded Localize, a tech startup that helps homebuyers harness the power of AI and big data to find their home. The business began in Israel in 2012 under the brand name Madlan. In 2019, it rebranded as Localize and expanded to the New York City market. So far, over 40,000 aspiring homebuyers have signed up. Potential homebuyers fill in a free, simple questionnaire about preferences for neighborhoods…
Pictured above: Technion alumnus Dr. Andrei Broder Technion alumnus Andrei Broder was recently awarded the Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The peer-selected award honors specific theoretical accomplishments that have had a significant and demonstrable effect on the practice of computing. Dr. Broder, along with his colleagues Yossi Azar, Anna Karlin, Michael Mitzenmacher, and Eli Upfal, were recognized for their Balanced Allocations framework, also known as the power of two choices, and their extensive applications to practice. By way of illustrating the Balanced Allocations framework, imagine you and a few friends are tossing…
