Two world-class institutions joined powers to unlock the potential of big data to transform child health. Relive this special launch event to celebrate a research partnership between Technion and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center that aims to revolutionize pediatric medicine for decades to come. The alliance established an innovative, data-driven program that could lead to the discovery of new treatments, help clinicians improve personalized medicine, and deliver the best possible health care to children around the globe.
Meet some of the esteemed scientists involved in this endeavor. Shai Shen-Orr ’00, Ph.D. has partnered with Pfizer to fast-track drug development and talked about his work in immunology and bioinformatics. Yonatan “Yoni” Savir ’04, Ph.D. has helped develop a device to remotely measure a person’s vital signs and discussed his research in harnessing artificial intelligence for health applications. And Marc Rothenberg, M.D., Ph.D., who has made great strides in understanding and treating allergies, shared his award-winning research in working with children and their families to overcome a new class of diseases involving chronic gastrointestinal allergic reactions.
The Technion is a pioneer in science research and education and one of the few technology and engineering institutions in the world to have its own medical faculty and affiliated hospital. Cincinnati Children’s is globally recognized for excellence in patient care, training, education, and research, and ranks among the top pediatric hospitals in the United States. The Technion and Cincinnati Children’s have already collaborated in academic symposia, post-doctoral training, and joint research. The partnership will greatly expand these activities with a focus on cutting edge research opportunities.

Featured Speakers

Marc E. Rothenberg, M.D., Ph.D. is the director of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (Cincinnati Children’s), a tenured professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Founder and Director of the Cincinnati Center for Eosinophilic Disorders, Founder and Director of the NIH-sponsored national Consortium of Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disease Researchers, and the incumbent Bunning Chair of Allergy and Immunology. His research focuses on the molecular analysis of allergic inflammation, primarily of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders. In a 2020 study, he and his team demonstrated a novel pathway involved in eliciting allergic responses in the esophagus and provided pre-clinical evidence that a drug approved to treat emphysema could help combat eosinophilic esophagitis. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Brandeis University and his M.D. and Ph.D. at Harvard Medical School.
Yonatan Savir, Ph.D. heads a lab in the Technion’s Rappaport Faculty of Medicine that studies information processing in biological systems and its failure in aged cells. His interdisciplinary research included developing novel artificial intelligence approaches for health challenges including unique algorithms that were used in collaboration with Israeli industry to develop a device used for remote monitoring of patients for COVID-19. He holds dual Technion bachelor’s degrees in physics and electrical engineering, received his master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the Weizmann Institute of Science, and conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School. Prof. Savir is a co-founder of a few startups, and consults with biotech companies.
Shai Shen-Orr, Ph.D. leads the multidisciplinary Systems Immunology & Precision Medicine Laboratory at the Technion’s Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, and is a member of the Lorry I. Lokey Interdisciplinary Center for Life Sciences and Engineering. A computational biologist with expertise in big data and immunology, Prof. Shen-Orr co-founded AI-driven CytoReason, which has collaborations with six of the world’s 10 largest pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer and Sanofi. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the Technion, his master’s degree from the Weizmann Institute of Science, and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. Following postdoctoral work at Stanford University, he joined the Technion faculty in 2011.

What if diagnosing cancer, Parkinson’s disease, or other serious illnesses could be as simple as breathing into a handheld device? That possibility is moving closer to reality thanks to the work of the Technion’s Prof. Hossam Haick, whose groundbreaking research is changing how diseases are detected around the world. In recognition of his extraordinary achievements, […]
Every year, the European Research Council (ERC) identifies some of the world’s most promising early-career researchers and gives them the freedom to pursue bold ideas. This year, two of those ideas came from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. From cancer research to artificial intelligence (AI), breakthroughs that shape the future often begin with […]
As more people turn to AI chatbots for companionship, life advice, or even as a stand-in for therapy, experts say the technology offers both new opportunities and risks when it comes to mental health. Prof. Tanzeem Choudhury is the chief of health innovation in the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute and has been studying AI and mental health for 15 years. She said AI tools are available any time, often at low cost, making it easier for people to access some form of mental health support.
