Dvir Aran is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Biology at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, with a secondary appointment in the Henry and Marilyn Taub Faculty of Computer Science. His research spans two complementary fields. As a computational biologist, he develops methods for decoding genomic and single-cell data: his tools SingleR and xCell, used to map immune cells in cancer and other diseases, have been adopted by more than 100,000 researchers worldwide, and his work has been cited nearly 17,000 times. In parallel, his lab builds artificial intelligence for the clinic — language-model agents that catch diagnostic errors in the emergency room, models that learn from electronic health records, and deep learning that reads pathology slides to guide cancer treatment.
Trained in computer science and computational biology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Prof. Aran was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford and UCSF before joining the Technion in 2020; he received tenure earlier this year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his real-time analyses of Israel’s vaccination campaign provided some of the world’s earliest evidence that the vaccines were working, quoted in Nature, Science, Reuters, and The Telegraph. At the Technion, he serves on the executive board of TERA, the Technion–Rambam initiative for AI in medicine, and as scientific advisor of the university’s multi-omics core. He is spending this year as a visiting scholar at UCSF and is cofounder and CTO of MedBAR.ai, a startup for simulation-based testing and certification of both physicians and medical AI systems. He is married and a father of three.
At the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, the future often begins with a deceptively simple question: What can we do today that we could not do before? “Science and engineering have never been about yesterday’s tasks. They’ve always been about the future,” said Prof. Lihi Zelnik-Manor, vice president of External Relations and Resource Development at […]
Their study investigated fruit flies, a classic model organism in genetics. It focused on the species Drosophila sechellia, whose ancestors’ larval bodies possessed tiny hair-like structures (trichomes). These structures have disappeared over the course of evolution. In other words, the same evolutionary outcome — the loss of gene expression — emerged through several distinct molecular […]
Los Angeles Unified School District recently announced it will bar student use of generative artificial intelligence on school devices for the 2026-27 academic year, joining New York City Public Schools in limiting children’s access to a technology no one yet knows how to safely manage. The nation’s two largest school districts made the move at […]
