Technion FoodTech: Solving Hunger Sustainably

August 03, 2023

Increasing the global food supply while protecting the environment is one of the world’s most pressing challenges. Technion is heavily invested in meeting this challenge, perpetuating Israel’s dominant position in the FoodTech revolution. “Eradicating world hunger and improving food security are among the main challenges facing humanity in the 21st century, as defined by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals,” notes Technion President Prof. Uri Sivan. “The Technion has the only faculty in Israel for research in food engineering, a faculty that leads the Israeli FoodTech industry.” The Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Engineering at the Technion is also one of…

A Hub of Hypersonic Flight Research

August 03, 2023

Technion Sets Up a Center for High-Speed Flight Imagine traversing the oceans and back in a few short hours or, within a single day, flying to and from an orbital hub as a space tourist or a spacelab research assistant. Hypersonic flight is key to these and other human ambitions in space and on earth. Aerospace engineers have been grappling with the challenges of high-altitude hypersonic flight since the 1960s – when the United States’ North American X-15 research aircraft achieved an astounding 6.7 times the speed of sound (also referred to as Mach 6.7), hitting an altitude of 354,200…

All Hands on Deck: Battling the Climate Crisis

July 28, 2023

Since its founding nearly 100 years ago, the Technion’s world-class scientists have focused on developing innovative and cutting-edge technologies crucial not only for Israel’s economy, society, and security, but also for humanity. Well before climate change became a buzzword on the lips of many, the university’s researchers prioritized solutions to promote sustainability and help reverse our planet’s grim prognosis. In March, United Nations’ Secretary-General António Guterres warned that “the climate time-bomb is ticking,” after a report cautioned that the world faces an even tighter deadline to avoid catastrophic climate change disruption. At the Technion, a wide range of activities and…

Rosman Center Fuels Technion Supercomputing

July 25, 2023

Dr. Martin and Grace Rosman have long supported Technion students by providing scholarships, funds for student reservists, dormitory housing, and the highly successful Rosman-Atidim Program, which gives disadvantaged youth the chance to attend the Technion. Once again, Technion students are at the forefront of the couple’s vision and generosity as they establish a new computer center for state-of-art supercomputing.  The Rosmans laid the ceremonial cornerstone for the Martin and Grace Druan Rosman Performance Computer Data Center during the Technion Board of Governors meeting in June. “The need for very fast computers is growing exponentially and it is very difficult to…

Coming Together to Fight Climate Change

July 20, 2023

While there are countless scientific breakthroughs that could help fight the world’s bourgeoning climate woes, “the problem lies in bringing together the science and technology people and the entrepreneurs” to make these innovations effective, said Noam Sonnenberg, director of the Israel Innovation Institute’s PLANETech community. In the interest of tackling this important, high impact challenge the Technion and the PLANETech community recently began a unique collaboration that will bring together researchers from different academic departments with entrepreneurs and investors interested in ClimaTech. The two groups recently conducted the first of a series of meetings that will explore research in foodtech,…

Sleep Problems, Meet Your Match

July 19, 2023

There’s nothing like a good night’s sleep, but that’s easier said than done. Now, a high-tech headband and accompanying app are helping put some sleep problems to bed. Israeli company NyX, co-founded in 2016 by Technion alum Ophir Orenstein, M.S. ’16, developed a comfortable, attractive headband that uses smart continuous-learning AI to automatically train your brain for optimum sleep. Other sleep aids use complicated training programs or things like guided meditation, said Orenstein, who is also the company’s chief technology officer. But NyX’s headband “talks” directly to the brain through neural signals. ”We cut out the middleman.” The headband is…

Technion Professor Wins EuroTech Future Award

July 17, 2023

Assistant Professor Charlotte Vogt of the Technion Schulich Faculty of Chemistry was recently awarded the first prize of the EuroTech Future Award, which recognizes researchers who have the potential to make a difference in their field and society at large. She was cited for her work on the subject of catalysis, which she believes will be key in solving global warming. Prof. Vogt’s research focuses on carbon dioxide hydrogenation catalysis, which explores the possibility of preventing CO2 produced by large industrial plants from entering the atmosphere, and instead converting it to something useful with the help of catalysts, which accelerate…

Art Science Inspiration

July 11, 2023

The ancient Greeks believed that artistic training and experience are essential to the human spirit and the development of creative minds. So did Renaissance thinkers, and so does Technion President Uri Sivan. Indeed, since 2020, the Department of Humanities and Arts has expanded its mission to include new research and additional teaching initiatives in history, philosophy, ethics, music and arts. As part of this expansion, Prof. Sivan this year established the Artist in Residence program, generously sponsored by Mrs. Sonia Marschak. The Sonia Marschak Artist in Residence program aims to combine the humanities, sciences, technology, and engineering professions, and create…

Motor Skills Rehab Gets a High-Tech Upgrade

July 06, 2023

In the hopes of aiding traumatic brain injury (TBI) sufferers with regaining their fine motor skills, Technion researchers conducted a study to shed light on how the brain controls finger dexterity through intricate mechanisms. They believe their findings could lead to the development of innovative rehabilitation strategies that are adaptable to individual patients’ needs. Led by Professor Firas Mawase and graduate student Gili Kamara of the Technion Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, the researchers developed a unique ergonomic device that enables in-depth testing of the strength of a patient’s fingertips. The device allowed them to analyze the ability to learn and…

AI Maps a ‘Constellation of Loneliness’

June 30, 2023

‘Smart cities’ are the epitome of modern-day life — teaming with technology-based infrastructure such as sophisticated surveillance cameras, timed traffic lights, and automated garbage pickup. Right? Well, what about the human equation? Between 2017 and 2021, municipal authorities recorded an unusually high rate of elderly residents who had passed away in their homes and were found only after their bodies had started decomposing. Clearly, their absence had gone unnoticed for quite some time. “Loneliness is an important issue in life: it’s a 21st century epidemic; We must not ignore it,” said Assistant Professor Meirav Aharon-Gutman, head of the Smart Social…

3D-Printed and Ready for Takeoff

June 23, 2023

Technion aerospace engineers in collaboration with U.S. software giant PTC have created a 3D-printed micro turbojet engine in one piece — not an easy feat considering the complexity of the many moving parts in a traditional jet engine. While it is not the world’s first 3D-printed jet engine, Associate Professor Beni Cukurel and Dr. Ronen Ben Horin, a senior research fellow at the Technion and a VP of Technology at PTC, can lay claim to being the first to make the printed engine in a single, complete assembly. “This microturbine engine is meant to be an iconic part that demonstrates…
