The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Israel was plunged into war on October 7, when Hamas terrorists from Gaza launched an unprecedented attack on the country’s southern border communities, killing 1,400 people, abducting hundreds and wounding thousands more. And for the more than 1.5 million people in Israel living with disabilities, it has been a time of quiet suffering, frequently isolated and struggling to ask for the practical and emotional help they need. Determined to aid this often overlooked community, an organization that supports autistic people has created a new online service to help them get that assistance. The ESNA Initiative (short for Emergency Special Needs Assistance) acts…
VR headsets loaded with software aimed to calm anxiety, stress and PTSD, as well as a handheld anxiety-reducing device, are on their way to Israeli citizens as a gift from their manufacturers to help alleviate emotional suffering during wartime. XRHealth, headquartered in Boston with R&D in Tel Aviv, has been distributing hundreds of its headsets to patients in 30 hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and mental health centers throughout Israel. XRHealth’s Patient Xperience software guides patients in meditation, self-relaxation, and stress and anxiety relief in 53 different virtual-reality environments.
A data analytics company in Israel is offering its artificial intelligence tools to help predict where and when the country will suffer rocket attacks during the ongoing war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip – even suggesting the optimal time to take a shower without interruption. Sisense which uses machine learning to analyze data for companies, has made its technology available to Israeli government bodies and other institutions during the conflict. Israel has been under continuous rocket fire from Gaza since October 7, when terrorists breached the border fence into Israel, killing 1,400 people and abducting at least 240 more. More…
A young couple guarding Israel’s frontline with Lebanon got married today as they prepare for Hezbollah to attack. Hila Elbaz, 25, a university student and Kfir Asor, 25, an engineer in the Air Force, had planned a lavish wedding ceremony on Monday October 22 to be attended by family and friends in their home town of Haifa. But the pair were both called up to defend Israel’s northern front following the deadly October 7 Hamas attack on Jewish settlements close to the Gaza Strip.
The Arrow air defense system intercepted a surface-to-surface missile launched from the “Red Sea area” at Israel, the military said Tuesday, in the first operational use of the long-range system during the war with Hamas. The ballistic missile was believed to have been launched by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, aimed for the southernmost city of Eilat. In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces said that air force systems tracked the missile’s trajectory and intercepted it “at the most appropriate operational time and location.” Photos showed a trail of smoke from the Arrow missile, as residents reported hearing a large…
Avi Aflalo, Simplex 3D co-founder and CEO: “We have accurate 3D models of most cities, towns and villages in Israel. The initiative will open the technology to communities that have not yet been modeled to be up and running within a few days with a defense system to manage emergency incidents, with either a three-dimensional model or a standard map.” Simplex 3D develops systems and algorithms for 3D urban management and planning for the private, and government and defense sectors. The company is harnessing its technology for the benefit of all local authorities and communities in Israel, to strengthen the…
Machine-learning analysis of CT scans during admission to the emergency enables earlier detection of intracerebral hemorrhages and reduces mortality rate by over 30 percent, according to a study published in the International Journal of Emergency Medicine. Intracerebral hemorrhage, commonly known as bleeding into the brain, is the second most common cause of strokes (15-30%) and the most deadly. The research, conducted by Dr. David Orion, director of the Acute Stroke & Neuro-Endovascular Department of Sheba Medical Center in Israel, involved 587 patients and used Aidoc’s algorithm to analyze CT scans of their heads.
For almost two decades, agriculturalists around the world have been sounding the alarm about the global disappearance of entire bee colonies, a vital link in the food chain whose absence is threatening the world’s food supply. Scientists have determined that one of the primary causes of colony collapse disorder (CCD) is the Varroa mite, a pest that attaches itself to bees as they develop in their cocoons and feeds on them, transmits viruses to them and can even kill them. Israeli startup ToBe has developed a device that releases precise amounts of miticides in beehives to rid them of these parasites without…
A visit to the bakery usually involves temptation by cupcakes or pastries in enticing hues of orange, pink and purple. What if we could create those vibrant shades of sweet treats without artificial additives and as naturally as bread rises? Israeli startup Phytolon (a combination of phyto, the Greek word for plant, and lon, Arabic for color) has developed strains of baker’s yeast that can produce 75 percent of the colors used in the food industry – including shades of orange, red, pink and purple. The startup’s yeast produces the betalain pigments that are naturally found in bright red beetroot, sunny yellow cactus fruit and…
“When you look at electricity production, you realize renewable energy has already arrived,” Yonadav Buber tells ISRAEL21c. “The cost of renewable energy production is already competing with that of coal and natural gas. The only reason we haven’t yet become dependent on renewable energy is that it works whenever it wants – you can’t turn on the sun at night or make the wind blow.” There are lots of companies examining ways to store renewable energy to make it more available. “But I always think that the simplest solution is also the best one,” Buber says.
An Israeli startup has bioengineered milk protein to create a wide range of dairy products – using mushrooms and no cows. And, the company says, their products are healthier, greener and cheaper to create. Haifa-based ImaginDairy uses freely available DNA codes for milk proteins to recreate their DNA, the company’s CEO and co-founder Eyal Afergan tells NoCamels. The data is even available on the website of the US government’s National Center for Biotechnology Information. There are two major proteins in milk – whey and casein, Afergan explains. These proteins are present in every single milk-based food. Casein makes up about 80 percent…
Moshe, a computer programmer who suffers from a life-long stutter, tried every kind of treatment to ease the jaw spasms, severe facial twitches and feelings of suffocation he experienced whenever he spoke. But every time he’d step out of a clinic or treatment center, he had no way of preserving the methods he had just been taught to manage his condition. That’s when he decided to use his technological skills to develop an algorithm capable of analyzing and monitoring his speech to ensure he was practicing these various stuttering techniques correctly. Six years later, he joined forces with speech language…
