The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
In December, the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology will celebrate 100 years. Looking at the list of achievements over the years makes you realize how significant its contribution to the state’s development has been – and still is. “For many years we were essentially the only engineering school in the country, and to this day we are the only technological university,” the Technion president, Prof. Uri Sivan, tells Israel Hayom in a special interview. “To a large extent, we shouldered the burden of founding the state on our shoulders, and over the years we have all reaped the rewards for this….
By the time Sara Smolley was born, her grandmother was unable to talk to her. She had been diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s disease at the age of just 40, which stripped her of much of her motor capabilities. “More than anything, it was her speech that was impacted,” says Smolley, the co-founder and VP Partnerships of Voiceitt, an Israeli speech recognition platform for people who have non-standard speech. “Of course, that affected her ability to build a relationship with my brothers and me, as we couldn’t understand what she was saying,” she tells NoCamels. The AI-powered Voiceitt platform is designed…
Brigadier General (Ret.) Pinhas Buchris ’91 is a longtime pioneer of Israel’s security, dedicated to serving the State both on the frontlines and in various leadership positions. He’s also a man who lives by his words. Once, when asked what advice he would give to up-and-coming Technion students, he said: “If I have a message for (them), it is: ‘The daring is victorious.’ Don’t give up on your dreams even in difficult times. Studies and perseverance can lead to improvement and success, even when the environment seems hostile or difficult.” His long and storied career and bold contributions to securing…
Leaning on our friends and family during these challenging times has been an immense relief for many of us, but one of the most important forums for solidarity in this era shaped by conflict and tragedy is not so visible. The power of online community has played an invaluable role in providing wartime support, and Nathanaelle Klein, Technion alumna and Chief Product Officer at Soli, is one of the talented individuals shaping an empowering online community in Israel right now. In speaking with Nathanaelle, I learned about how the academic foundation she acquired at the Technion inspired her global career, and…
An Israeli startup that uses innovative technology to reduce the sugar content in fruit juices has partnered with a leading American food and beverage supplier. Rehovot-based Better Juice uses natural enzymes to convert sugars in juice to non-digestible compounds, like dietary fibers. The sugar is replaced with other sweet molecules, without changing the taste or affecting the naturally occurring nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The collaboration will see global company Ingredion, which is headquartered in Illinois, lead Better Juice’s Series A funding round through its investment arm, Ingredion Ventures. The aim is to fast track Better Juice’s entry into the US juice…
Search and rescue at sea is a valiant endeavor to save people and vessels from dangerous situations, but the rapidly growing number of autonomous vessels at sea and the missions they handle require a safer solution for recovery. Identifying this peril, Haifa-based startup Sealartec came up with a safer way to rescue manned and unmanned vessels – and is in operation globally. The Sealartec solution is an autonomous system that acts as a cradle for unmanned vessels, bringing them back to the mother ship safely without risking crew lives.
The US federal health insurance program Medicare has for the first time made a payment for Israeli-made exoskeleton ReWalk, a wearable robotic device that allows paraplegics to walk again. The ReWalk Personal Exoskeleton provides powered hip and knee motion for people with a spinal cord injury (SCI), allowing them to stand upright, walk, turn, and climb up and down stairs. The payment of $94,617 to ReWalk was made via Medicare administrative contractor Noridian Healthcare Solutions and signals the federal agency’s division to recognize the ReWalk Personal Exoskeleton as a medically necessary device for people with an SCI.
An Israeli company has been granted clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its software used in the removal of liver tumors. The BioTracelO software created by Rehovot-based TechsoMed Medical Technologies received De Novo clearance from the FDA, which is approval granted to a novel system. The software is used during ablation therapy – a minimally invasive treatment that uses extreme temperatures to kill tumors – and is designed to predict the tissue response to the therapy. It is also designed to aid physicians who are performing liver tumor removal by providing real-time visuals with the ultrasound imaging.
That the world’s bee population is in crisis is no secret. Scientists, conservationists and agriculturalists have been scrambling for a solution to a situation that could be catastrophic for humans who rely on these stripy natural pollinators and their winged cohorts to propagate much of the food that we eat. Israeli company Edete says it has a unique solution, giving the insects – and those who benefit from their hard work – a helping hand in the form of mechanical artificial pollination, which it says is vital if we wish to ensure food security for future generations.
Tevel Aerobotics, an Israeli ag-tech startup with a novel drone-based harvesting solution, demonstrated the latest edition of its harvesting solution at the 2023 World Ag Expo. The company has partnered with S&S Metal Fabrication to build an autonomous tree fruit harvesting solution called the Alpha-Bot that is ready for deployment this upcoming growing season. Tevel Aerobotics is a 2021 recipient of an RBR50 innovation award for fruit-collecting drones. The partnership with S&S Metal Fabrication is critical to the overall success of this solution. The drones are tethered so that they can work continuously all day gathering ripe fruit from the trees in an orchard. The drones…
Amid tragedy and conflict, finding ways in which we can apply our work to support others is essential now more than ever. Fortunately, Start-Up Nation is up to the task. Bright minds within Israel, and Israelis all over the world, have worked to respond to the horrific events on October 7th and the war that has followed with rapid innovation and generosity. Recently, I had the opportunity to connect with Adi Wallach, co-founder and CEO of CalmiGo and alumna of the undergraduate biomedical engineering program at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Her collaboration with her team and their generous donation of more…
People suffering from narrowed or semi-blocked arteries in their legs can find themselves in a vicious cycle – not doing any exercise because of the pain it entails, but finding that the lack of activity only exacerbates the condition. A newly developed implant that sits just under the skin on the leg is intended to dilate and enhance blood flow through those narrowed arteries with ultrasonic waves, allowing crucial oxygen-rich blood to reach the lower limbs and ease the pain. Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a condition that restricts the flow of oxygenated blood from the heart to the legs,…
