The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Classic denim blue jeans have been a staple in the global fashion industry for over half a century – but their iconic color comes with a heavy environmental price. Dyeing just a single pair of jeans involves thousands of liters of water. And the dye itself comes from synthetic indigo, which is made of a slew of toxic chemicals, including hydrosulfites, that are all later released into the environment via waterways. Israeli startup Sonovia has created a way to give blue jeans their quintessential color that both uses a non-toxic dye that is better for the environment and cuts water use by…
Israel Tech Guard, an all-volunteer, not-for-profit initiative empowering Israel’s defenses with the latest technologies, is looking to raise $2 million for rapid-pace initiatives designed to help protect the nation during and after the war. Formed on October 7 while the Hamas attacks were wreaking death and destruction, Israel Tech Guard was cofounded by serial tech entrepreneur Mor Ram-On; software engineer and team lead at Cybereason Ron Balter; and senior programmer Lior Mizrahi, cofounder and CTO of Maveriks. Around 200 volunteers from Israel’s tech community are working for Israel Tech Guard, which is structured in teams of two to 20 developers operating as internal…
You’ve had too much to drink. Or maybe you didn’t sleep the night before. Both represent cognitive states of impairment that should keep you from getting behind the wheel. But who’s going to stop you? Israeli startup CorrActions says it’s the car itself that should strongly state, “Sorry, mate, tonight you should take a taxi home.” But how will the car recognize how many cocktails you’ve imbibed or how many hours of shuteye you got? The steering wheel knows, the company’s CEO, Ilan Reingold, tells ISRAEL21c.
An Israeli developer of a handheld device that uses light to noninvasively detect pressure ulcers under the skin has received a patent from the country to support future commercial use. IR-MED‘s PressureSafe device is placed on the surface of the skin and exposes it with infrared light. It then evaluates the light intensity and patterns reflected by the different layers beneath the skin’s surface and uses an algorithm to determine whether the patient has a pressure ulcer. Pressure ulcers are sores that are caused by sustained pressure being placed on a particular part of the body, interrupting the blood supply…
Israel, the land flowing with milk and honey, is wasting millions of tons of its food every year. In fact, according to Leket Israel, the country’s leading food rescue organization, over one third of all the food that it produces gets thrown away. An Israeli startup is looking to put a dent in this statistic by providing bakeries, delis and other food establishments with a platform to specifically sell the food products remaining at the end of the day, which would otherwise be trashed. SpareEat’s app lets Israelis purchase “surprise bags” of pastries, sandwiches, produce and more at heavily discounted…
Dan Shechtman (born 24 January 1941) is an Israeli scientist. He received the 2011 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his discovery of quasicrystals. He was born on 24 January 1941, in Tel Aviv, Israel. His early education laid the foundation for his later achievements in the field of science. He attended the Technion–Israel Institute of Technology, where he pursued his undergraduate and graduate studies in materials engineering. His fascination with the properties of materials and crystal structures became a guiding force in his academic and professional life. Shechtman earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Technion in 1966. He…
American-Israeli startup PhaseV is on a mission to overcome one of the most significant challenges of drug development: the clinical trial phase, the longest and most expensive part of the process. A recent Deloitte report reveals that, on average, a single new drug takes $2.3 billion and seven years to develop. Yet many candidates fail the clinical phase even if the biology works. That makes for a poor return on investment and wasted potential for treating diseases. “The development process for new drugs must therefore be transformed and could be made much more efficient with digital technologies,” the report urges.
An Israeli automotive startup was busy completing its first major contract with car giant Volvo when its team was caught up in the October 7 attack by the Hamas terror group, which killed 1,200 people in southern Israel. Carrar has developed a new way of automatically cooling electric vehicle (EV) batteries, by more effectively dissipating the heat generated when being used or charged, or just idling in a hot parking lot. This prevents damage to the batteries that in some extreme circumstances could even cause the car to catch fire. The Carrar facility is based near the city of Sderot, where…
On Saturday, October 6, 1973, Eddie Rabinovitch ’75 and Marianna Shapiro ’77 had just mailed their last batch of wedding invitations when suddenly they noticed cars on the street — unusual in Israel on Shabbat and Yom Kippur. The radio, typically silent on the Sabbath, broke the news: Egypt and Syria had staged a surprise attack on Israel in the north and the south, starting the Yom Kippur War. They had planned a festive evening wedding but due to blackout restrictions, settled on a daytime event without music or dancing. A week after their November 1 wedding Eddie was deployed…
Supermarkets could soon be selling yogurts, milkshake powders and other products offering relief to the millions of people who have Crohn’s disease or colitis. An Israeli startup is preparing for clinical trials of a natural supplement derived from cow milk that will reduce inflammation – and reduce patients’ reliance on prescription medication. Scientists now know that mothers’ milk contains exosomes, tiny capsules of microRNA — the molecules that regulate protein production in their bodies – that combat inflammation and other symptoms associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn’s and colitis.
A new app has created a virtual sisterhood for thousands of women across Israel, giving them a safe space to share their experiences, their problems and even just their thoughts – particularly in wartime. The Soli app allows users to anonymously express their state of mind and their feelings, called Moods on the app, ranging from common emotions like happy, stressed or lonely to more specific sentiments such as “in the mood for a night out,” “looking for new friends” and “in need of advice.” Opening the app takes the user to a map, where they see other users and their Moods,…
Israeli and US medtech companies have teamed up to create a program that uses artificial intelligence to identify patients at high risk for respiratory or pulmonary diseases such as lung cancer. The LungFlag AlgoMarker, which analyzes data from a patient’s electronic health record, is a collaboration between Medial EarlySign, a Hod Hasharon-based company that develops clinical predictive analytics, and Geisinger, an integrated healthcare system from Pennsylvania. Working with Geisinger, Medial EarlySign developed the program to facilitate earlier invention, which is a key feature of the American healthcare provider’s care model as it helps improve clinical outcomes, creates higher patient satisfaction and reduces…
