The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
No idea is too big in Start-Up Nation, and resilience and motivation are what make Israel’s bustling tech economy so successful. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Omer Schneider, former CEO and co-founder of cybersecurity company CyberX, about his time at the Technion and how he took his big idea all the way to an acquisition deal with the largest tech company in the world. His dedication to his work in every stage of life gave him the confidence to believe in himself and make an impact on millions of people throughout his career. Omer’s story is also…
Judith Hocherman-Frommer always envisioned an academic career at the Technion. After all, she spent 10 years there. She received a bachelor’s degree (’87) in electrical engineering followed by a master’s (’90) and doctoral degree (’94) in control systems. After a postdoc at Princeton University, she taught as an adjunct lecturer for three years, while working full time at Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. “I thought I would get some real-world experience before immersing myself in academia,” she said. She intended to stay for one year, but 27 years and five promotions later, Hocherman-Frommer is the executive vice president for research and…
Programs, apps and websites are all built using code that tells a computer, phone or other device what to do and how to do it. Actually creating that code is a tricky and complicated process, where even the smallest error can cause entire platforms to fail. Finding a mistake in rows of letters and numbers can be even harder and is extremely time consuming. In fact, software developers can spend up to 50 percent of their working hours testing and debugging code, according to well-respected trade magazine ACM Queue. But now an Israeli company has developed an AI “team member”…
An Israeli medtech company whose novel therapy freezes and destroys malignant tumors has announced positive results in a trial of breast cancer patients. IceCure Medical’s ProSense system uses extremely cold liquid (cryoablation) to freeze and destroy abnormal tumors as an alternative to surgical removal. Its focus is currently on early-stage breast, lung, liver and kidney tumors. While cryoablation is not a new process, IceCure Medical’s system allows physicians to perform the procedure in their own offices, with no need for hospitalization. The company’s ICE3 study is the largest multicenter clinical trial performing cryoablation on low-risk and early-stage breast cancer tumors….
About 200 million people worldwide suffer from age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and that number is expected to increase to nearly 300 million by 2040. AMD is an eye disease that can blur central vision. It is the leading causes of blindness in Western countries, where people live long enough to experience such “first world” ocular issues. One in eight Westerners over the age of 60 can expect to develop AMD. Already in 2021, the market for AMD treatment was estimated at $7.4 billion. The United States made up 52% of that market, the European Union 41% and Japan just over…
In a pivotal scene in the blockbuster film “Barbie,” the CEO of Mattel fumes, “No one rests until this doll is back in the box,” referring to Barbie’s escape from his toy universe into the real world (where, for instance, she swaps her pink high heels for some no-nonsense Birkenstocks). Like the film’s Barbie, Technion alumna Neta Blum B.Sc., M.Sc. has long railed against the stereotypes and double standards that often keep women in a box. Today, the aerospace engineer heads a technological division in Israel’s Ministry of Defense’s R&D body, has earned a place in Forbes Israel’s “30 Under…
Israeli AI-assisted colonoscopy technology has been given the seal of approval from the internationally respected Lancet Digital Health journal, following an extensive study of its capabilities. The novel polyp detection system developed by Haifa-based MAGENTIQ-EYE was studied by the Lancet over a 14-month period at 10 leading medical centers around the world, involving 31 endoscopists and 952 patients. The study, titled “A computer-aided polyp detection system in screening and surveillance colonoscopy: an international, multicentre, randomised, tandem trial,” found that the MAGNETIQ-EYE platform increases the average detection rate for adenoma (non-cancerous or pre-cancerous tumors) by 7 percent, and had a 17-percent lower rate of missed…
Israeli startup Wearable Devices is collaborating with US-based Qualcomm Technologies to integrate its touchless control solution into the latter’s development platform. The Mudra Band – an AI-powered wristband created by Wearable Devices – can be paired to any device via Bluetooth, and uses a combination of unique sensors and artificial intelligence to support touchless control of the Apple Watch. Users can toggle and switch between connected devices, including Mac computers, Apple TVs, smart glasses, and various mobile gaming systems. Mudra will be integrated into Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Spaces XR Developer Platform, which allows developers to create applications for devices that use virtual and augmented reality…
The car industry is pretty conservative and it’s usually led by men. This gives Michal Geva an entrepreneurial edge. Geva is the general manager of Harman Automotive Israel and the general manager for OTA (over the air) and cybersecurity at Harman International. She became associated with Harman some 10 years ago, when she joined Israeli startup Red Bend just before it evolved into Harman Israel upon being purchased by Harman, an automotive electronics technology company and a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics. “We do software updates for cars,” she explains to ISRAEL21c. “Think of how you update the software for your phone – the same goes…
Buying produce, and then having it quickly go bad, is a common disappointment for many. One Israeli startup has developed a solution that keeps fruits and vegetables fresh for longer without changing or adding anything to the produce themselves. Ness Ziona-based Liva has developed a sticker that when applied to the package, can extend the freshness of fruits and vegetables for up to another seven days. The sticker was created by Ifat Hammer, co-founder and CTO, drawing on her expertise in food engineering and biotechnology. She figured that instead of modifying the produce itself, “good” bacteria that was already present in the…
Hours in surgery, weeks in hospitals and months of recuperation – or a five-minute procedure under local anesthesia and straight back home with no side effects. That’s the difference that AI (artificial intelligence) developed in Israel will now be making for patients diagnosed with liver cancer. Techsomed, a medical imaging startup, allows physicians for the first time to see exactly what’s happening in real time while they destroy (or ablate) a tumor using targeted heat through a needle. Thermal ablation therapy, a minimally invasive procedure for small tumors, has huge benefits over surgery or chemotherapy for the patients.
An award of $1.3 million has been split between seven Israeli climate tech startups as part of the startup category of the Climate Solution Prize, an initiative created to encourage innovation in this field. The selection for the track was carried out by Startup Nation Central, a Tel Aviv-based nonprofit dedicated to promoting Israeli innovation, and the Climate Solutions Prize Organization. The winners include: Filo System, whose data compression engine provides storage and networking saving, which lowers energy consumption and cooling cost for data centers; TIGI Solar CEO Zvika Klier is a Technion alumnus.
