The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
While 2024 has challenged the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Israel, and the global Jewish community, I have started to notice a more prominent feeling of hope and excitement for the future. In discussing what this new year holds for Israeli innovation with Technion President Uri Sivan and brilliant professors, it is clear that supporting scientific exploration has never been more urgent to usher in a year of rebuilding and economic progress for Israel. I spoke with American Technion Society president Mark Gaines about the research that we’re excited to follow this year and how the Technion will be…
Uzi Halevy, of blessed memory, was an 11th-generation Jerusalemite and Technion alumnus with three loves: family, Israel, and the Technion. Bighearted and younger in spirit than his years — playing basketball his entire life — Uzi encouraged his three children to pursue their passions, expecting little in return. So when he asked them to continue […]
David Jaffa, a seasoned financial planner in the Detroit metropolitan area, has a deep commitment to philanthropy, focusing particularly on education. With more than two decades of support for the American Technion Society (ATS), he exemplifies how one can blend financial acumen with a passion for giving back to the community and securing a comfortable […]
The American Technion Society’s lay leaders serve as strategic advisers to ATS, and in November the group convened in Boston to learn about the latest Technion innovations — and receive inspiration as they continue their work as Technion ambassadors. Attendees included the ATS National Board of Directors, Fellows in the current cohort of the Joel and Jeri Rothman Leadership program, which trains and develops ATS lay leaders, the New England Region Board, and the Boston Business Council.
This has truly been a year unlike any other. When the American Technion Society began its fiscal year on October 1, 2023, we were brimming with excitement and grand plans for celebrating the centennial year of the Technion. Less than a week later, the events of October 7 would irrevocably change the course of the year for the Technion, Israel, and the world. As you read our Year in Review, we hope you’ll be inspired by how the Technion took care of the campus community – including the 3,500 students, faculty, and staff called to active duty — while caring…
Every year, distinguished guests from Israel and the Technion visit the U.S. to meet with American Technion Society (ATS) supporters and share news of discoveries and other happenings on the Haifa campus. Adding to the excitement in 2024, ATS recognized the Technion’s centennial with a host of special events. Some 1,500 ATS supporters and friends […]
Greg Tanenbaum developed his passion for the Technion in the same way he chose his baseball affiliation. “You’re watching your dad root for the Yankees, and you become a Yankees fan,” he said. “I saw how proud my grandparents were of the Technion. That was my foot in the door. Since then, it’s grown by leaps and bounds.” As a teenager, he would drive his grandfather, Joseph Tanenbaum, of blessed memory, and his grandmother, Bernice, 94, to American Technion Society (ATS) events. “They’d be super excited,” Greg recalls. “They built a social network through ATS.” Later, his grandparents would walk…
In the year since the horrific and devastating attacks of October 7, 2023, our world has completely changed. More than one thousand Israelis lost their lives that day – a tragedy that we will never forget. As we reflect and hope for the hostages’ safe return, one thing has become clear: Israeli resilience has never been stronger. As people around Israel woke up to a new reality on October 8, 2023, so too did the students and staff at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. To commemorate this tragic anniversary and honor the bravery of all those called to…

Since opening its doors in 1924, the Technion has helped build Israel, safeguard its citizens, and prepare for the future. To commemorate a century of dreams dreamed — and often fulfilled — the American Technion Society (ATS) held events across the nation recognizing Technion achievements and ATS donors whose philanthropic fingerprints are on buildings, laboratories, and programs throughout campus. “Each of you in his own individual way is determining the development of this University,” said President Professor Uri Sivan during an event on April 9 in New York City. “Without your support, none of this would have been possible.” While…
Ten days after the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War in 1973, Stephen B. Klein visited Israel with his father, Raymond, and his brother, Warren. They spent the first day in the field, escorted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and later visited a hospital to talk with wounded soldiers. “I walked into a room and there was a young man who had lost his leg above the knee,” Klein recalled. “We were similar in age and profession. He was an accountant, and I was a businessman. We both had kids. I realized I could have been in that bed….
After three decades working as a psychiatrist, Irene Kitzman enjoys spending her semiretirement behind a telescope, gazing into distant stars and galaxies from her home in Arizona. Her passion for astronomy has inspired Kitzman to support Technion research that aims to provide humanity with even deeper glimpses into the cosmos. By leveraging her individual retirement account (IRA), she is funding Technion astronomy research now while making provisions for further support after her lifetime — and, in the process, sparing her retirement savings from taxation. Kitzman supports this research using annual distributions from her IRA. Like all individuals with an IRA…
