The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology with a few of my friends and colleagues at the American Technion Society (ATS) to show solidarity for our peers in Israel and learn more about how things have changed over the last several months. It was immediately clear to all of us how quickly everyone in the north adapted to new challenges that come with wartime, and we were all impressed with how the Technion has rallied around its students and faculty – particularly the thousands who have been called to service. I spoke with…
Congratulations to multi-generational Technion supporters Robert Davis and Stephen Seiden, who received honorary fellowships from the Technion for their long-term commitment and generosity to the University. The two were recognized at a moving ceremony June 3 during the 2024 Board of Governors meeting on the campus in Haifa. This year’s meeting, aptly called a “Solidarity Board,” was more modest than previous years, due to October 7. But the smaller attendance helped to deepen the interaction among attendees. “Many of the Technion’s friends came to the Board of Governors’ meeting from near and far, despite the situation,” said Technion President Professor…
At a time in academia when so much divides us, we need to remember the power of our collective innovation when we come together – across cities, countries, and even continents. Cornell Tech is a prime example of collaboration between academic institutions on opposite sides of the world. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Israel Cidon, Director of the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech, to talk about the importance of international partnerships in catalyzing scientific advancement. Throughout my career in both the private and public sectors, I’ve learned that collaboration is key to…
Best-selling author Saul Singer didn’t know how profound his research for his latest book with Dan Senor, “The Genius of Israel: The Surprising Resilience of a Divided Nation in a Troubled World,” would be until after Oct. 7. The book hit the U.S. market on Nov. 7, a month after Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel. Senor and Singer also co-wrote “Start-Up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle,” but this time, instead of concentrating on Israel’s technology, they focused on its people. In researching his book, Singer discovered that Israel is a “young” nation with the median age being 29;…
The Technion announced today that two well-known foundations have joined together in a collaborative effort to enhance the Technion Human Health Initiative. The undertaking will establish the D. Dan and Betty Kahn Human Health Building, which will be home to the Bruce and Ruth Rappaport Cancer Research Center. Technion President Prof. Uri Sivan said, “The construction of this building and the cancer research center housed in it is nothing less than a historic event. We are celebrating today two of the largest donations in the history of the Technion, which were made possible thanks to a first of its kind…
Amid tragedy and conflict, finding ways in which we can apply our work to support others is essential now more than ever. Fortunately, Start-Up Nation is up to the task. Bright minds within Israel, and Israelis all over the world, have worked to respond to the horrific events on October 7th and the war that has followed with rapid innovation and generosity. Recently, I had the opportunity to connect with Adi Wallach, co-founder and CEO of CalmiGo and alumna of the undergraduate biomedical engineering program at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Her collaboration with her team and their generous donation of more…
On Saturday, October 6, 1973, Eddie Rabinovitch ’75 and Marianna Shapiro ’77 had just mailed their last batch of wedding invitations when suddenly they noticed cars on the street — unusual in Israel on Shabbat and Yom Kippur. The radio, typically silent on the Sabbath, broke the news: Egypt and Syria had staged a surprise attack on Israel in the north and the south, starting the Yom Kippur War. They had planned a festive evening wedding but due to blackout restrictions, settled on a daytime event without music or dancing. A week after their November 1 wedding Eddie was deployed…
Eliad Peretz ’13 was just 10 years old when he decided what he wanted to do in life. Helping his grandfather harvest olives, the pair would return at dusk, “lay back on blankets on the lawn, and look up at the sky,” Dr. Peretz recalled. “Those were the moments that helped me identify my path.” By fifth grade, he wrote what he called his first five-year plan, already knowing he wanted to work at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Earlier this year, the NASA scientist and Technion alumnus was awarded the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal — entering the…
Chicago Technion Innovators is a vibrant two-year program designed to educate future American Technion Society (ATS) leaders about the impact of the Technion. Each cohort consists of emerging leaders within the Chicago community interested in supporting Israel and its technological innovation, and in ensuring the future of the ATS. Innovators attend in-person and virtual events with faculty, students, and alumni to learn about the Technion’s cutting-edge research and its important place in Israel’s history. Graduates are invited to serve on Chicago’s local leadership board, and over time may assume national leadership positions. The following interview was conducted with program co-founders…
The Technion Honorary Fellowship is given in honor of lifelong devotion and support of the Technion, Israel and education. Franklin residents Cathy and James Deutchman are longtime supporters of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. As a third-generation supporter herself, Cathy Deutchman (née Brody) was preceded by her parents, Rhea and Robert Brody, and her grandparents, Anna and Samuel Brody, as critical supporters of the cutting-edge Israel institution. Now, the Deutchmans have received one of the highest honors awarded by the institution as they were given an Honorary Fellowship at a Technion Board of Directors meeting on June 11 at the…
What are the big scientific discoveries that will emerge from the Technion in the next 100 years? Award-winning science correspondent and journalist Ira Flatow and three leading voices from the Technion – former Technion President Peretz Lavie, Professor Hagit Attiya, and Associate Professor Ido Roll – revealed the ingredients that make the Technion so exceptional.
