The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
NeuroKaire’s offices on Yigal Alon Street in Tel Aviv are about as far as one can get from the gleaming workspaces of a typical Israeli high-tech company. The parking lot is dark and dirty, the elevator creaks, and there is no doorman, nor a sea view, unlike the surrounding luxury towers. The surprise begins only after stepping through the wide office doors: giant microscopes, highly sophisticated robots, and some of the world’s most advanced medical equipment, all enabling one of the most complex biological feats in existence, turning ordinary blood cells into human brain cells. “We could have been, like…

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel was in Israel this week for a visit that included Oct. 7, 2023, massacre sites, academic honors and scientific institution tours. She received explanations about sexual atrocities committed by Hamas some two years ago during the massive attack on the Gaza border communities, with German Ambassador to Israel Steffen Seibert sharing her visit on…
For Negin Nader Bazrafkan, Yiddish lessons have been an unexpected perk of moving into her Upper West Side apartment. Her roommate — and unofficial Yiddish teacher — is 96-year-old Rebecca Schull, a retired actress best known for her roles as Fay Cochran on the sitcom Wings and as protagonist Mike Ross’ grandmother on Suits. From Schull, Bazrafkan has learned words like chutzpah, schmuck, simcha, klutz, schmutz, and faynshmeker. Her favorite is tuches, slang for buttocks, a word that makes them both laugh and their cheeks flush. The unlikely roommates’ 61-year age gap might raise eyebrows on its own. But for some of Bazrafkan’s friends, it’s the fact that she’s Muslim and…
IceCure Medical’s tumor-freezing treatment ProSense has nabbed FDA approval, making it the first medical device of its kind to be endorsed for the local treatment of breast cancer. Shares lost some of their gains by Monday morning and were trading up about 8% from Friday’s close. Treatment with ProSense involves a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that aims to destroy tumors by freezing them, all without the need for surgical removal of breast tissue. This approach also allows for…

This week, two Israeli neuroscientists have rolled out a blood test in the US and Israel that they say can measure the responsiveness of a patient with major depressive disorder to common antidepressants. Depression is one of the most common forms of mental disorder, affecting more than 330 million people worldwide. Treatment methods rely primarily on a taxing trial-and-error process to find the right prescription drug, which can take years. In Israel, the psychological toll of 23 months of war and counting has made the need for effective mental health treatment felt more than ever. The blood test, created by…
This hands-on, field-based methodology became the foundation of Yaara’s work at the Technion Innovation Center, where she helped traditional industries enhance their innovation capabilities — not just by generating ideas, but by implementing them. “We were focused on how management works within itself, how it enhances creativity and innovation,” she said. “It was a great […]
Until last summer, Shlomit Weiss managed 20,000 people at Intel centers around the world, overseeing development of the company’s most widely-used computer chips. Her resume includes three decades in the bosom of the US-based chip manufacturer, which is also the largest private employer in Israel, and another three years as Mellanox’s hardware development manager. And if that’s wasn’t enough, she was also one of those who persuaded Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang to acquire Mellanox. But now, at age 62, Weiss is reinventing herself, and busy with the small details of starting an independent business: building her own website, handing out…

Michael Belkin is a serial entrepreneur of a particularly rare breed. Like other serial entrepreneurs, he never stopped developing, researching, and inventing throughout his life, but he did so not out of a pursuit of money, but primarily out of the joy of creation, curiosity, and a desire to bring medicine to the world. It so happened that he made his first exit when he was already 68 years old. At an age when most of his peers were retiring, Belkin sold a company he founded for $180 million. Even then, he had no intention of retiring, but continued to…
