The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
In the year since the horrific and devastating attacks of October 7, 2023, our world has completely changed. More than one thousand Israelis lost their lives that day – a tragedy that we will never forget. As we reflect and hope for the hostages’ safe return, one thing has become clear: Israeli resilience has never been stronger. As people around Israel woke up to a new reality on October 8, 2023, so too did the students and staff at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. To commemorate this tragic anniversary and honor the bravery of all those called to…
As we mark the tragic anniversary of October 7, we honor the incredible spirit of resilience, resolve, and response expressed by Israelis throughout the nation. Following the initial days of trauma and devastation, Israelis refused to be victims and took action. They volunteered by the thousands to help their fellow citizens in need. And the Technion community was among them. Beyond all that the Technion administration did to support students and secure the campus, the Technion Student Association, academic departments and faculties, and staff displayed inspiring solidarity. The collective spirit of volunteerism was truly remarkable and played an active and…
M.A. is a third-year undergraduate in the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Engineering. He is also a reserve solider in the Egoz, an elite commando unit specializing in guerrilla warfare. On October 7, he was ordered to immediately join his unit. He was deployed to the South, fighting the terrorists who infiltrated the country. “Fighting was fierce in the kibbutzim,” he said. When the terrorists were eliminated from Israel, his unit was sent to fight Hamas in Gaza. For more than three months, M.A. was involved in intense combat. Cell phones were not permitted, and he couldn’t communicate with his…
A research group in the Technion’s Henry and Marilyn Taub Faculty of Computer Science was able to takeover Siemens’ new controllers, among the most secure in the world. These controllers are used in a wide range of systems, including aircraft, vehicles, production lines, power stations, gas and oil pipelines, smart homes, traffic lights, and even nuclear reactors. The research was presented at the Black Hat USA 2024 conference by alumni Nadav Adir and Alon Dankner under the guidance of Professor Eli Biham, head of the Hiroshi Fujiwara Cybersecurity Research Center at the Technion, and Dr. Sara Bitan, a senior researcher…
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology with a few of my friends and colleagues at the American Technion Society (ATS) to show solidarity for our peers in Israel and learn more about how things have changed over the last several months. It was immediately clear to all of us how quickly everyone in the north adapted to new challenges that come with wartime, and we were all impressed with how the Technion has rallied around its students and faculty – particularly the thousands who have been called to service. I spoke with…
A.J. searched several jewelry stores to find the perfect wedding ring for his fiancée, but nothing was quite right. So being the Technion student he is, he taught himself 3D modeling, designed it in 3D software, found the stone he wanted, and searched for the perfect jeweler and goldsmith to put it together. That’s before arranging for a friend of a friend to stealthily deliver the ring to him in Vienna, check that the sun would shine in just the right spot in the botanical garden in the Belvedere Palace where he would propose, and cover informational signs in the…
R.B.Z.E. is about to complete her doctorate in the Technion’s Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine. She is also a mother of two boys, ages 6 years and 16 months, and chief executive officer of Wisemama, which supports women who are combining parenthood and academic studies. While R.B.Z.E. was working on her master’s degree with a toddler at home, she relied on a friend who had completed an advanced degree with children. “She helped me through challenges unique to student mothers, and I couldn’t have done it without her,” she said. “That’s why I started Wisemama.” The mentoring project…
“I’m part of the division that protects civilians in Israel and that makes me very proud,” said Technion alumna Maya Shnur. “Every morning when I go to work, I feel like I’m on a mission.” Shnur works at the vaunted Israeli defense company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems as the deputy general manager of Mergers, Acquisitions, […]
Israel wouldn’t have earned its reputation as the Startup Nation if some of the thousands of companies that have come out of this small country hadn’t earned big bucks for their investors. How big? Jerusalem-based Mobileye holds the title for the most lucrative acquisition of an Israeli company: $15.3 billion – that’s how much Intel paid to acquire the company in 2017. The purchase knocks Jerusalem-based Mobileye off the top spot, after if was bought by Intel for $15.3 billion in 2017. The news about Wiz certainly focused worldwide attention once more on Israel’s lively high-tech sector, which despite experiencing…
Sarit Shpits remembers a moment when a colleague, analyzing battlefield video, recognized members of the IDF unit using her company’s equipment. It starkly brought home how her work goes beyond selling cyber-protected communications networks to safeguard drones and other robotics. “It’s much more than business,” said Shpits. “Each piece of equipment leaving here needs to be the best possible because the people using it are our kids, our friends, our husbands, boyfriends, girlfriends.” A Technion graduate of the class of 1997, Shpits joined Australian-U.S.-Israeli-based Mobilicom earlier this year, hoping to contribute more directly to Israel’s security. “October 7 increased my…
In the late 1970s, when no one thought it could be possible, Dov Raviv, a Technion alumnus, had a fantastical idea for a defensive weapon that could intercept and shoot down long-range incoming missiles. The idea developed into what would become the Arrow Antimissile System, the world’s first missile defense platform, and what would protect […]
