Learn More About ATSFormer Israeli national team swimmer and Technion student Nikol Seleznev is pursuing biomedical engineering to develop technologies that could improve patients’ lives.
For Technion undergraduate Nikol Seleznev, biomedical engineering is an exciting avenue through which to help patients overcome medical and mobility challenges — and the Technion is the perfect place to blend technology with medicine.
The focus of her academic work in the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering is tissue engineering and biomechanics, an area she hopes to pursue professionally upon graduating. Her research aims to develop technologies such as artificial organs and improved prosthetics and address critical medical challenges such as organ shortage and mobility impairments.
“This area of study combines my passion for engineering with a desire to improve lives through innovative healthcare solutions,” she explains. “Being part of a field that bridges cutting-edge technology with human well-being motivates me to contribute meaningfully to the future of medicine.”
Beyond her studies, Nikol is active in the swimming world. She serves as the head coach and team manager of the only artistic swimming school in northern Israel, which operates out of the Technion’s sports center. She brings deep personal experience to the position: during high school she swam with the Israeli national team and on her hometown’s city team. Following October 7 and during the war with Hamas, Nikol devoted extra attention to her role as a mentor to Israeli children.
“During the war, I dedicated a significant amount of time to supporting the children, ensuring they maintained a consistent training routine despite the challenges,” she says. “This experience has reinforced the importance of my role in offering stability and care to my students, not just in their athletic development, but also in their emotional well-being.”
Nikol was born and raised in Ashdod. In addition to swimming, she enjoys tennis, surfing, Pilates, spending time at the beach, and watching movies. She speaks English, Russian, and Hebrew.

He was given a prosthesis and what followed was months of determination and rehabilitation at Beit HaLochem, the IDF Disabled Veterans Center. Then on a trip to the United States with a delegation from the B’lev Ehad association, Y. was shown an advanced prosthetic unlike his own. Later, he received the same one, transforming his […]
“I thought it was fake,” she recalled. “There was no chance.” As reports continued to emerge, reality became impossible to ignore. By 7 a.m., L.’s brigade commanders had convened an emergency call. Within 20 minutes, L. had packed her things and was helping mobilize reserve battalions, distribute weapons and equipment, and prepare soldiers to enter […]
When I read that Hackney Council had voted to begin ending its twinning arrangement with Haifa, I couldn’t help wondering: why Haifa? Whatever your views on the wider Middle East conflict, Haifa has always felt different. It is probably Israel’s most multicultural city – a place where Jews, Muslims, Christians, Druze and Baha’is live alongside one another. It’s a city where Hebrew and Arabic are heard every day, and where people from different communities don’t just coexist; they work, study and build lives together. It isn’t perfect, no city is. But if we’re looking for examples of what coexistence can…
