Graduating students from the Technion’s Henry and Marilyn Taub Faculty of Computer Science showcased their work at a fair featuring the keystone projects. The exhibits included innovative mobile apps and digital devices that ran the gamut from improving health to coordinating travel and advancing Israel’s windsurfing team. One group made rehabilitation fun for people suffering from an injury or neurological event affecting the fingers. Nadav Heller, Eran Cohen, and Gilad El-Dor constructed a glove with electronic fingertips, turning the monotonous exercise of touching the tip of each finger with the thumb over and over again into a Guitar Hero-like game….
Israel’s Knesset (parliament) has launched a new audio guidance system to help the blind, visually impaired, and people with orientation difficulties navigate its premises. The personalized audio guidance was developed by Israeli startup RightHear, developer of an app that provides talking signage and audio descriptions for indoor locations like hospitals, museums, universities, and grocery stores on a smartphone or tablet. The Knesset launched the system on Israel’s Blind Day (June 6) through an event it held in solidarity for the visually impaired community. Hundreds of guests used the RightHear app as they navigated the legislature’s premises.
OrCam is already one of Israel’s startup successes, with a device that literally helps the blind to “see”. It reads text to the user – anything from a newspaper to a cereal packet. It also recognizes people, identifies objects, and helps the user find their way around. The Jerusalem-based company was established by Prof. Amnon Shashua and Ziv Aviram, founders of Mobileye, the driver assistance system that Intel bought in 2017 for $15.3 billion. OrCam launched MyEye for blind and visually impaired people in 2015 and has now refined its technology to help children with dyslexia, ADHD and other special…
Students from the Henry and Marilyn Taub Faculty of Computer Science at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology recently developed an app for the Madrasa Project to help people learn Arabic. Madrasa is a free-to-use resource that advocates for better communication in Israeli society through spoken Arabic courses. There are currently more than 100,000 students enrolled in Madrasa courses. Yet until now, the Madrasa Project did not have an app. According to Gilad Sevitt, founder and director of Madrasa, “During our seven years of operations, we have seen the need for people to practice their speaking proficiency while learning,…
