The Eyelid Patch That Predicts Seizures

July 30, 2024

A tiny patch is fixed to your eyelid. It monitors your blink pattern and sends a warning to your smartphone that you’re about to have an epileptic seizure. Or that you’re about to fall asleep at the wheel. Or else it measures your REM (rapid eye movement) to help diagnose sleep disorders or Parkinson’s disease or a range of neurological conditions. This isn’t science fiction. This is the next step forward in the world of wearable technology. And according to Yariv Bar-On, CEO at Israel-based Blink Energy, it’s a gamechanger.

Hackathon Heroes: Cooking Up Solutions for PTSD

July 30, 2024

Since October 7, tens of thousands of wounded soldiers and civilians in Israel have embarked on rehabilitation processes. According to relevant professionals, a large share of them is not only coping with physical challenges but also with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), problems adapting, problems communicating, and psychotic conditions. Consequently, it’s crucial to find efficient solutions related to mental resilience. To that end, the Technion’s Henry and Marilyn Taub Faculty of Computer Science dedicated its annual social–technological hackathon, CS Hack: Doing Good, to developing solutions to improve mental resilience. Each year, the hackathon chooses a theme for innovation that…

The 15 Biggest Acquisitions in Israeli History

March 19, 2025

Israel wouldn’t have earned its reputation as the Startup Nation if some of the thousands of companies that have come out of this small country hadn’t earned big bucks for their investors. How big? Jerusalem-based Mobileye holds the title for the most lucrative acquisition of an Israeli company: $15.3 billion – that’s how much Intel paid to acquire the company in 2017. The purchase knocks Jerusalem-based Mobileye off the top spot, after if was bought by Intel for $15.3 billion in 2017. The news about Wiz certainly focused worldwide attention once more on Israel’s lively high-tech sector, which despite experiencing…

This AI Breakthrough Talks Back

July 15, 2024

Israeli startup aiOla recently won the “Best Speech to Text Solution” award at the 7th annual AI Breakthrough Awards that recognizes the world’s most innovative achievements in the artificial intelligence industry. The Herzliya-based company beat more than 5,000 nominees from over 20 countries to clinch the prestigious prize. Among AI Breakthrough’s previous winners are OpenAI and Deloitte. The company’s voice-capture technology combines natural language processing (NLP), which understands human language as it’s spoken and written, with automatic speech recognition, which uses AI to process human speech into readable text. Thanks to this advanced model, aiOla’s technology can recognize more than…

Public Transport Just Got an Upgrade

July 07, 2024

Israeli public transport app Moovit, which helps travelers navigate local journeys in more than 100 countries, has launched a new platform for longer, intercity trips. The cross-regional planning will allow users to plan journeys across regions of a country, using both public and shared transportation. The app already covers a range of methods of public transport, including buses, trains and even motorized scooters available for hire on the street. The new platform lets travelers plan routes between locations in different regions of a country where Moovit is active, within the same time zone in locations with more than one. Users…

Every Picture Tells a Story

July 23, 2024

Many of us rely on the internet for images we need in our daily work or correspondence. But all too often, the search doesn’t always hit the mark — despite continuous advances in artificial intelligence. For instance, you need a picture of a female CEO but most of the images popping up are of men. You’d like to playfully send your girlfriend a picture of roses in her favorite color, lavender, but you can only find red. Better results could be coming your way, thanks to a team of Technion doctoral students and alumni working with Technion Assistant Professor Yonatan…

Turning Tractors into Self-Driving Machines

May 29, 2024

Officially, Israeli-American company Bluewhite may be in the autonomous technology business, but its main mission is ensuring the future of the world’s food supply. The company launched its data-driven autonomous (self-driving) tractor four years ago, and, according to Bluewhite Vice President for Production and Testing Amir Peleg, it has a significant role to play in feeding the global population. “When you look at everything we are facing in agriculture today – we are talking about labor shortages, buying challenges and costs, operational costs—sustainability needs to be accelerated so that around all that we can have enough food to feed the…

Preserving Holocaust Survivors’ Testimonies

May 05, 2024

An Israeli startup that uses AI to generate highly accurate transcripts and captions is working to preserve the testimonies of survivors of the Holocaust. Verbit says it is using a collection of “relevant and specific terms” relating to the Holocaust and the recollections of survivors to train its Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) platform. According to the company, this gives more accurate results, in particular when recording survivors who speak a range of languages in a variety of accents. The Givatayim-based startup is partnered on the project with the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (commonly known as the Claims…

Bringing Sunshine Inside for Indoor Wellness

May 06, 2024

An Israeli startup is on a mission to bring the benefit of natural sunlight indoors into our homes, workplaces and even hospitals. Solight addresses the issue of lack of sunlight in indoor spaces by creating a solar lighting system that takes the natural light of the morning and afternoon hours and channels it into desired spaces, providing health benefits to those stuck inside and cutting exposure to artificial light. The company was founded in 2012 by brothers Ofer and Dror Becker, who recognized the energy-saving advantages of sunlight but also realized that its health benefits shine brightest. Nvidia has agreed to acquire Israeli artificial intelligence (AI) company Deci. According to estimates obtained by Calcalist, the value of the deal is $300 million. In Deci’s last fundraising round in July 2022, it was valued at an estimated $200 million. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close during the second quarter. Nvidia confirmed the deal to Calcalist, stating that “NVIDIA’s expertise in AI will be complemented by Deci’s capabilities in NAS, which automates the design of deep learning models to improve performance. Avi Wigderson Wins Turing Award

April 11, 2024

For more than 40 years, Avi Wigderson has studied problems. But as a computational complexity theorist, he doesn’t necessarily care about the answers to these problems. He often just wants to know if they’re solvable or not, and how to tell. “The situation is ridiculous,” said Wigderson, a computer scientist at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. No matter how hard a question seems, an efficient way to answer it could be hiding just out of reach. “As far as we know, for every problem that we face and try to solve, we can’t rule out that…
