The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
As president of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, I am inspired by the resilience and determination of Israeli students, faculty, and staff who continue their academic pursuits under the current difficult circumstances. At the same time, I am troubled by the escalating violence, antisemitism, and anti-Israel sentiment observed at prominent universities in North America, Europe, and Australia, as well as by the calls for academic boycotts of Israeli universities. These calls fuel a vicious circle of incitement, hatred, and violence faced by Jewish students and faculty around the world. I fear that academic boycotts will not only harm…
For 100 years, the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology has been the engine of ingenuity and entrepreneurship for Israel, the Startup Nation. “This study from Stanford University proves there is some special sauce in the Technion that distinguishes it from other universities,” said Michael Waxman-Lenz, chief executive officer of the American Technion Society. New research from the Stanford Graduate School of Business shows that the Technion has a 25 times higher chance than any other university outside the United States to produce a U.S. unicorn. A unicorn is a startup valued at more than $1 billion that is privately…
Nine Israeli scientists, including three from the Technion, were tapped as new members of EMBO, the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), which supports talented life sciences researchers at all phases of their careers. Professors Oded Beja, Benjamin Podbilewicz, and Asya Rolls, join the rarified ranks of EMBO members that include Nobel laureates James D. Watson and Francis H.C. Crick, co-discoverers of the double-helix structure of DNA; Isidor Isaac Rabi, whose work ushered in MRI technology; modern day pioneer of CRISPR gene editing, Emmanuelle Charpentier; and Technion Distinguished Professors Aaron Ciechanover and Avram Hershko, co-discoverers of the ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation system.
This month, 136 new doctors received their medical diplomas from the Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine at the Technion. Twenty-six of them graduated with honors, five with special distinction, and 14 completed the prestigious M.D.–Ph.D. program, which combines medicine and research. Three of the outstanding graduates claim proud family legacies at the Technion and in medicine.
While education is essential for guiding the next generation in making an impact on the world around them, we cannot underestimate the vital role that our friends and support network also play in shaping our (and the world’s) future. In my conversation with Nadir Izrael, physics and computer science alumnus of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, we take a deep dive into how his Technion education not only prepared him to build a company from the ground up, but also gave him the opportunity to forge a friendship that blossomed into a lifelong business partnership. Michael: In speaking…
An experimental physicist from Technion has been awarded the Lem Prize 2023. The statuette was presented at a gala ceremony in the auditorium of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. The Stanisław Lem European Research Prize (Lem Prize) was established in 2021 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the eminent Polish science fiction writer, who received an honorary doctorate from the Wrocław University of Science and Technology in 1981. The prize of PLN 100 000 is awarded to young scientists (under 40 years of age) studying or carrying out research in the European Union and associated…
Five of the seven non-American universities whose graduates have the best chances of founding a unicorn in the United States are Israeli. The Technion – Israel Institute of Technology ranks first, with Reichman University surprising in second place. This is according to a study by Prof. Ilya Strebulaev, Finance Professor at Stanford and Founder and Director of the venture capital initiative at Stanford Graduate School of Business. In fourth place is the European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD), which has four campuses. Ben Gurion University also surprised by coming in fifth place, ahead of Tel Aviv University (6th) and the…
An Israeli academic has been honored with The Khalifa Award for Education for her research on how children learn to read. The Emirati award was given to Tzipi Horowitz-Kraus, an associate professor at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, who was one of four winners from outside the United Arab Emirates. The Khalifa Award for Education, which has both the UAE president and prime minister among its patrons, was founded in 2007 to advance standards of education at all levels in the Emirates and across the whole Arab world.
At a time in academia when so much divides us, we need to remember the power of our collective innovation when we come together – across cities, countries, and even continents. Cornell Tech is a prime example of collaboration between academic institutions on opposite sides of the world. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Israel Cidon, Director of the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech, to talk about the importance of international partnerships in catalyzing scientific advancement. Throughout my career in both the private and public sectors, I’ve learned that collaboration is key to…

Despite the ongoing war and its effects on Israel’s younger population, an Israeli team won first place at the international robotics competition in Houston, Texas, at the end of April, for the first time in twenty years. This competition is run by a non-profit organization called FIRST which strives to expose students to STEM-related subjects through different robotics competitions. With the support and sponsorship of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, FIRST Israel offers children programming from when they are in primary school to when they attend high school through which they can learn about robotics as part of…
This article is part of a special report on the total solar eclipse that will be visible from parts of the U.S., Mexico and Canada on April 8, 2024. CONCAN, Tex.—After months of waiting, planning and anticipating, the eclipse is nearly upon us. This rare heavenly alignment will be a marvel to look at for anyone lucky enough to have clear skies at the time. For a few minutes, the face of the moon will perfectly overlap that of the sun from our perspective on Earth, blocking out most of the light from our star and leaving only the wispy white glow…
