The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
In 2013, the world’s first lab-grown hamburger was served in London. Made from cattle cells, it cost around €250,000 at the time and was more a proof of concept than a lunch. The idea seemed almost like science fiction: producing real meat without raising and slaughtering an entire animal. A little more than a decade […]
This time of year, pomegranates are piled high in produce aisles, stacked in bins at the farmers market, and decorating Rosh HaShanah tables. When it comes to extracting the juicy seeds, everyone has their own unique technique. Some score the crown and pull the fruit apart in a bowl of water so the seeds sink […]
As bee populations continue to decline worldwide, an Israeli technology company is turning to artificial intelligence and robotics in an effort to reverse the trend and protect a critical component of the global food supply. BeeWise, an Israel-based agri-tech company, has developed BeeHome, an autonomous beehive designed to continuously monitor bee colonies and automatically intervene when threats to their survival are detected. The challenge is significant. Bees are responsible for pollinating nearly 75% of the world’s food crops, playing a vital role in the production of fruits, vegetables, nuts, coffee, and cotton. Yet colonies around the world are increasingly threatened…
The Technion is a leader in sustainable innovation, where researchers transform breakthroughs in energy, water, materials, and climate technology into scalable solutions with global impact. Here are just a few examples of how that innovation moves from the lab into the world.
Put bluntly, we simply do not do the best job of feeding all 8.3 billion people on Earth. As the World Food Program explains, 318 million people worldwide are facing “acute hunger” due to conflicts, economic conditions, and, particularly, the climate crisis. According to the United Nations, plant health could be part of the solution to this issue. However, the UN also noted that plant disease is making it harder for us to maintain crops, with about 40% of the planet’s agricultural yield dying off before it ever reaches our plates. While pesticides have helped reduce pest populations, they have…
A new Israeli study shows that listening to the sounds fish make while eating can enable real-time monitoring, early detection of disease and more precise feeding in aquaculture ponds. The research will be presented on Tuesday at the International Sea The Future 2026 conference in Eilat, hosted by the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry and the Negev, Galilee and National Resilience Ministry. Contrary to the common perception of the underwater world as silent, it is in fact rich with sound. Marine environments are filled with communication signals between animals, noises created by movement and even sounds accompanying everyday activities such…
Israeli researchers have discovered a plant-based molecule that can effectively combat pathogenic fungi and serve as a foundation for developing environmentally friendly treatments. The study was led by Dr. Ofri Levi of the MIGAL Galilee Research Institute and Tel-Hai College’s Faculty of Sciences, together with Prof. Benny Horwitz of the Technion’s Faculty of Biology. Their findings were published in mBio, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology, and offer a new approach to addressing one of the fastest-growing threats to public health and agriculture: fungi that have developed resistance to medications and pesticides. Fungal pathogens pose a serious danger…
Researchers from the Technion’s Material Topology Research Lab have unveiled TreeSoil, a 3D-printed earthen structure designed to protect young trees and foster early growth in degraded environments. Fabricated using WASP’s LDM XXL extrusion system mounted on a KUKA KR50 robotic arm, each TreeSoil module is built layer by layer from locally sourced soil, then naturally dried and assembled on-site without adhesives. Drawing inspiration from ancient agricultural methods that shaped soil and stone to shelter crops, TreeSoil applies computational design to reimagine these techniques for modern ecological restoration. The project’s interlocking brick geometry allows for modularity, easy on-site assembly, and strong…
Dr. Assaf Glazer is CEO at Vinst, an exciting Israeli foodtech startup that offers an AI-powered cooking app, to help users organize recipes, personalize meals, and elevate the home-cooking experience… as well as a platform where you can print your very own family cookbook. A serial entrepreneur in a variety of areas where he finds […]
A breakthrough in clean energy could unlock affordable, industrial-scale green hydrogen. For the first time, scientists have determined how to scale up decoupled water electrolysis, a technique that produces green hydrogen without carbon emissions or expensive hardware. This method could be a game-changer in how hydrogen is made, stored, and used across various energy-intensive industries. Traditional hydrogen production relies on dirty energy, releasing tons of pollution. Green hydrogen, by contrast, is made by splitting water with clean energy like solar or wind, but current technologies struggle to scale due to cost and instability. Conventional electrolysis uses membranes to separate hydrogen…
For many older adults, something as simple as breakfast can become a challenge. Chewing is harder, digestion is slower, and foods once enjoyed lose their appeal. But what if a bowl of cereal could do more than just start the day? What if it could support better health, be easy to eat, and actually taste […]
Forty years of clinical studies leave no doubt that a diet rich in fresh vegetables saves lives. The link between lack of fresh dietary vegetables and early death from diseases like cancer and heart disease is clear. By fully embracing World Health Organization guidelines concerning fresh vegetables, that risk could slashed by nearly half. “As a cancer immunotherapy researcher, who’s lived and breathed the immune system for years, I realized that the way to fight disease starts not in the hospital but on the plate,” says Dr. Tsipi Shoham, founder and CEO of GreenOnyx. She spearheaded the creation of this…
