The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
What happens when your vegan boyfriend wants to eat healthy but has little time for food prep? If the girlfriend is a Technion student, she just might come up with a solution. Neta Shimony was among a team of Technion graduate students participating in an international food-tech competition tasked with creating healthy processed food when her boyfriend’s dilemma sparked the idea for a tofu omelet mix. She and her teammates, from both the Faculty of Data & Decision Sciences and the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Engineering, developed an instant (just add water), freeze-dried, vegan, tofu-based omelet that comes in…
Lishai Neuman ’19 is a Ph.D. candidate in the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Her research is focused on harnessing new materials for the development of novel nanoelectronics devices, and spans a wide range of topics, including material fabrication, design, and characterization. It involves state-of-the-art characterization tools, such as atomic-resolution microscopes and a particle accelerator. Lishai’s latest advance, published in Advanced Functional Materials in 2023, presented a route for manipulating the electric properties of a material by precise control of the distance between two adjacent atoms. This fine-tuning of the material’s properties is part of…
Omer Sabary ’18, M.S. ’20, is a Ph.D. candidate in the Henry and Marilyn Taub Faculty of Computer Science. He is also a 2023 Ilene & Steve Berger Technion Visiting Fellow, meeting with ATS supporters in the Northeast United States. Born and raised in Qiryat Atta, Omer served in the elite 8200 unit of the Israel Defense Forces as a techno-intelligence analyst team commander and intelligence director prior to his Technion studies. Currently, Omer is working on next generation DNA-based systems that could help solve the world’s digital storage crisis. He chose DNA as this storage medium for its durability…
Tom Rahav ’23 is an undergraduate student in the Henry and Marilyn Taub Faculty of Computer Science and a 2023 Ilene & Steve Berger Technion Visiting Fellow meeting with ATS supporters in the Central areas of the United States. Tom had the honor of being chosen as one of just 10 members of this year’s “LAPIDIM entrepreneurship” Faculty Excellence Program, geared toward first-rate computer science students with the potential for leadership or entrepreneurial pursuits. As part of his current studies, Tom is working on a project that revolves around the classification of cancer types as part of a research group…
Itai Massad ’17, M.Sc. ’18 is a Ph.D. candidate in the Schulich Faculty of Chemistry working in the research group of Distinguished Prof. Ilan Marek, chair of the soon-to-be-launched Stewart and Lynda Resnick Sustainability Center for Catalysis. He is also a 2023 Ilene & Steve Berger Technion Visiting Fellow meeting with ATS supporters in the the central cities of the U.S. His research specifically focuses on catalysis and its role in constructing complex organic molecules — the building blocks for all life forms — with the aim of finding sustainable routes toward important bioactive molecules. Itai has received numerous accolades…
Ido Han is pursuing his M.D. in the Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, where he is a research assistant in Professor Sara Selig’s Laboratory for Molecular Medicine. He is also a 2023 Ilene & Steve Berger Technion Visiting Fellow, meeting with ATS supporters in the southeastern cities of the United States. The goal of his research is to explore whether a mutation that had never been described before caused a little girl to develop the genetic syndrome ICF2 (autosomal recessive immunodeficiency-centromeric instability-facial anomalies), which is characterized by immunodeficiency, intellectual deficit, and facial dysmorphism. Ido was born in the…
Maya Goldshlager is an undergraduate in the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering focused in two areas: signal analysis, and biomechanics and fluids. She is also a 2023 Ilene & Steve Berger Technion Visiting Fellow, meeting with ATS supporters in the Northeast United States. Maya is attracted to the field of biomedical engineering for its breadth of subject areas and its many paths forward. For example, in April and May 2022 she participated in two biomedical hackathons where she created prototypes of new medical tools for the treatment of multiple sclerosis and urinary tract infections (UTI), respectively. The UTI project won third…
Roni Goldin ’22 is a master’s candidate in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering and a 2023 Ilene & Steve Berger Technion Visiting Fellow meeting with ATS supporters in the western coast of the United States. He is researching hypergolic ignition of kerosene-based gel fuel and hydrogen peroxide in rocket motors in the David I.A. Fine Rocket Propulsion Center, with the hope of developing advanced, environmentally friendly rocket propulsion technology. Roni was chosen to become a member of the “Silon” excellence program, a part of the Atuda Program. Atuda is a joint academic-military initiative that allows select students to study prior…
Aviram Avital ’18, M.S. ’20 is a Ph.D. candidate in the Wolfson Department of Chemical Engineering, pursuing his degree in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and a Technion MBA. He is also affiliated with the Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute at the Technion. A 2023 Ilene & Steve Berger Technion Visiting Fellow, Aviram met with ATS supporters in the southeastern United States. Aviram was born and raised in Qiryat Bialik, a periphery town near Haifa, and currently lives in Nesher, close to the Technion campus. He served in the Israel Defense Forces’ Armored Corps – first as a combat soldier and then in…
Imagine restaurant menus with selected dishes for men and others exclusively for women, or supermarket products categorized by gender. Looking even further into the future, what about designer 3D cultivated steaks that are male- or female-specific? Using simulated digestive systems, Technion scientists have identified differences in the way men and women digest food that could help tailor healthier food solutions by gender. The study, published recently in Food Hydrocolloids, was prompted by research recognizing that some medications are more effective in treating a specific gender, and that the same drug can have different side effects in men versus women. “We…
An Extraordinary Technion Student Interns at the Jacobs Institute Tobias (Tobi) Weinberg was among the nine talented young Technion students interning at the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech on Roosevelt Island this past summer. Already a top student at the Technion, where he is entering his senior year, he quickly distinguished himself at the Jacobs Institute, working with Professor Wendy Ju on human-robotic interaction. “Tobi stood out because he whipped through tasks very quickly, and so was able to start grappling with some of the open-ended research problems the Ph.D. researchers were working on,” said Prof….
Pictured Above / Guy Bar-Nir (R) and Tom Rahav Every summer, a group of Technion students spends nearly two months interning at the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech. The program advances collaboration between the two campuses, and the Jacobs Institute’s unique focus on industry gives students a taste of entrepreneurial career options. “The summer internship program is one of the most exciting programs we run that deepens the relationship between the Cornell Tech and the Technion,” said Ron Brachman, director of the Jacobs Institute. “It gives the students a taste of cutting-edge graduate-level research, experiencing what it’s…
