Professor Gideon S. Grader joined the Technion Faculty of Chemical Engineering in 1989, and served as the dean from 2016 to 2020. In 2007, he became the founding director of the Nancy and Stephen Grand Technion Energy Project (GTEP), which aims to ensure the university’s role as a key player in energy research; he held that role until 2015.

Prof. Grader’s research aims to develop clean technologies that will decarbonize our economy and prevent global climate change. Focuses include the development of ceramics for energy applications, combustion of non-carbon fuels, and hydrogen generation. One project has centered on using advanced electrolysis methods to produce hydrogen from water. In cooperation with Prof. Avner Rothschild from the Material Science department, Dr. Hen Dotan, and doctoral candidate Avigail Landman, he developed an innovative way to simplify the process and save about 30% of the energy required to produce hydrogen. He has also developed ultralight ceramic foams that can be used commercially for high-temperature insulation as a substitute for asbestos.

Prof. Grader’s work has been recognized with a number of awards, including the Kenneth T. Whitby Award, an Alon grant, the Goldberg Prize for Excellence in Research, the Hershel and Hilda Rich Technion Innovation Award, and the Henry Taub Prize for Excellence in Research.
