The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
With Israel’s Iron Beam laser missile defense system to become operational in the fourth quarter of 2025 Rafael Advanced Defense Systems today announced the establishment of a new Energy Warfare Administration in its Land and Naval Systems Division. The new administration will manage high-power laser systems projects. The new administration head named only as Dr. Y. will serve under Rafael EVP & General Manager of the Land & Naval Systems Division Tzvi Marmor. Dr. Y., a graduate of the Technion with a Ph.D. in physics, joined Rafael about 12 years ago and has since held a series of senior positions…
Everybody needs a buddy – especially Navy divers. Working underwater is physically taxing, visibility is low, and divers can easily become exhausted or suffer from insufficient oxygen or nitrogen narcosis, resulting in cognitive impairment. The problem with relying on a partner who can come to your rescue, however, is that they are vulnerable to the same conditions. That’s why Cornell researchers are working to understand how robots can assist humans in dangerous and physically challenging environments. “We have these tools with amazing capacity, but for them to work with people, they need to be able to understand people,” said Andrea…
Considered to be one of the greatest revolutions in cancer treatment, immunotherapy enhances the immune system’s ability to target and destroy cancer cells efficiently. One of the key challenges in immunotherapy is the uncertainty regarding patients’ responses—not all patients respond to the treatment, and some may experience side effects without meaningful therapeutic gain. Therefore, there is a need to identify biomarkers that can predict treatment effectiveness based on individual patient data. New and promising findings on this topic are now presented in a study by Technion researchers published in the journal Cell Genomics. The research was led by Prof. Keren…
This is the 16th year that Calcalist has ranked the 50 most promising private technology companies in Israel. To compile the list, we consulted a number of prominent investors, consultants, and entrepreneurs active in the Israeli market. We asked participants to identify the fastest-growing startups with the greatest potential to make significant business moves in the coming year, with an emphasis on companies not yet included in rating agency portfolios. After weighing the data and the range of expert opinions, Calcalist’s high-tech reporters and editors—well-versed in the inner workings of the tech sector—compiled this year’s list of the 50 most…
Forty years of clinical studies leave no doubt that a diet rich in fresh vegetables saves lives. The link between lack of fresh dietary vegetables and early death from diseases like cancer and heart disease is clear. By fully embracing World Health Organization guidelines concerning fresh vegetables, that risk could slashed by nearly half. “As a cancer immunotherapy researcher, who’s lived and breathed the immune system for years, I realized that the way to fight disease starts not in the hospital but on the plate,” says Dr. Tsipi Shoham, founder and CEO of GreenOnyx. She spearheaded the creation of this…
The electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most essential tools in modern medicine, used to detect heart problems ranging from arrhythmias to structural abnormalities. In the U.S. alone, millions of ECGs are performed each year, whether in emergency rooms or routine doctor visits. As artificial intelligence (AI) systems become more advanced, they are increasingly being used to analyze ECGs—sometimes even detecting conditions that doctors might miss. The problem with this is that doctors need to understand why an AI system is making a certain diagnosis. While AI-powered ECG analysis can achieve high accuracy, it often works like a “black box,”…
The October 7 war began with the infiltration of thousands of Hamas terrorists across the “Hourglass” barrier between Gaza and Israel—a high-tech defense project completed two years earlier at a cost of approximately 3.5 billion shekels ($1 billion). By 6:29 that morning, what had been lauded as “a technological and creative project of the highest order” by senior security officials—who believed it would offer unprecedented protection to Israeli communities bordering Gaza—had already begun to unravel. The barrier stretches roughly 65 kilometers, from Kerem Shalom in the south to Zikim Beach in the north. Its subterranean component consists of a deep…
For the past 100 years, the Technion has played a seminal role in transforming a tiny country with plenty of existential challenges and few natural resources into a technological powerhouse and a world-class economy. From its early days, Technion students, faculty, and alumni persistently engaged in groundbreaking research, fueled by the necessities of a young country in a hostile neighborhood. Time and again, they devised creative solutions across many fields, resulting in numerous remarkable breakthroughs that helped Israel become one of the world’s most advanced technological pioneers. Technion researchers and alumni were directly responsible for establishing most of Israel’s key…
For delivery robots, not all sidewalks are created equal – some are uneven or clogged with people and bus shelters – so researchers at Cornell Tech developed a “robotability score” and rated every street in New York City on how hospitable it would be to robots. Their rating system is the first of its kind, researchers said, and may help urban planners and robotics companies plan for future robot deployments that won’t disrupt existing sidewalk environments. “I don’t know that everybody wants robots in their neighborhood, but if they do, the robotability score can help them think about, what are…
Here’s a win-win opportunity if you grow grapes for a living. A startup in Israel is integrating solar panels into vineyards. They generate electricity (and revenue). And they give the farmer precise control over how much sunshine reaches the vine. The solar panels are fitted right above the grapes, tilting throughout the day – either to capture as much sunlight as possible for energy production, or to shade the vine to delay ripening and improve the flavor of the grapes. Generating solar energy in vineyards (agrivoltaics) is not a new idea. The challenge is to do it better than the…
About two weeks after a Russian drone struck the cover built to contain radiation at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Israeli biotech firm Pluri, a developer of placenta-based cell technology, landed an agreement to help Ukraine develop an emergency response to life-threatening radiation sickness in case of a radiological event. The nearly three-year war between Russia and Ukraine has underscored the ever-rising threat of nuclear fallout amid repeated shelling of a nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threat to use nuclear weapons. Last month, Haifa-based Pluri (formerly Pluristem) entered into an exclusive collaboration with Ukrainian…
A young man was brought to the emergency room of Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem in traumatic cardiac arrest after shrapnel tore his inferior vena cava, the big vein in the middle of the belly. The young trauma surgeon opened the young man’s chest to start internal cardiac massage. At the same time, he instructed his team to use HemaShock, which they’d learned about when treating soldiers during army reserve duty. Applied in emergency cases of dangerously low systolic blood pressure caused by hemorrhagic shock or cardiac arrest, this unique exsanguination tourniquet squeezes all the blood from the patient’s…
