The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Technion scientist Assaf Zinger began wondering about breast milk when his wife, Noa, was breastfeeding their newborn daughter, Tamara, five years ago. His wife had just received the COVID vaccine, and Tamara was starting to develop symptoms of the vaccine. “I thought, ‘Hey, wait a minute, nanoparticles should degrade in the stomach,” Zinger told The Times of Israel in a teleconference call. “They should not be absorbed in the small intestine.” After two years of research, Zinger said he believes that his team of 16 scientists is the first in the world to show that breast milk proteins can be…

Technion alumni have started 729 companies and contributed over $21 billion to Israel’s GDP, cementing Israel’s status as the Startup Nation. The proposed takeover announced Tuesday is part of Google’s aggressive expansion into cloud computing during an artificial intelligence boom. The frenzy is driving demand for data centers…
Noam Azran is a real live cowboy. He spent a decade on horseback patrolling the vast cattle ranches of California and Argentina. And now he heads an Israeli tech startup that uses drones — instead of traditional cowboys — to monitor the welfare of millions of cows. BeeFree Agro has just delivered its first fleet of “autonomous flying cowboys” to a paying customer. They’re the eyes in the sky that will transform the way the world’s beef cattle are farmed, says Azran. “I find it hard to believe in 10 years from now there will be commercial livestock growers who…
Bloomberg L.P. co-founder and philanthropist Tom Secunda today announced a landmark donation to Cornell Tech, Cornell University’s tech campus in New York City, totaling $10.5 million to create the Cornell Empire AI Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program Fund. This donation will advance the mission of Empire AI, providing researchers and faculty with unparalleled access to computing power and opportunities to engage in groundbreaking AI research for the public good. “I’m proud to be supporting Cornell’s top AI researchers in their pursuit of new, groundbreaking AI developments that will benefit the people of New York. By giving these researchers the freedom to explore…
Nora Nseir, the founder and co-CEO of Nurami Medical, knows that the Haifa-based biomed company’s groundbreaking product may not seem particularly impressive at first glance. It looks like a plain white bandage, just 5 cm in width and length, but if everything goes according to plan, it could fundamentally change the way doctors treat brain and spinal cord injuries. The product’s ability to regenerate meningeal tissue after complex neurological surgeries sets it apart. So far, $16 million has been invested in Nurami, and the company is now completing another funding round—this time for $30 million. There is still a long…
Wendy Ju, associate professor at Cornell Tech, the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, and the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute, has been awarded a place in the Class of 2025 of the prestigious ACM SIGCHI Academy. The award honors her leadership and innovations in the field of human-computer interaction (HCI). ACM SIGCHI — the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction — is one of the world’s largest associations of professionals who contribute towards the research and practice of HCI. The highly competitive SIGCHI awards uplift those who have changed the field of HCI…
Unlike artificial language models, which process long texts as a whole, the human brain creates a “summary” while reading, helping it understand what comes next. In recent years, large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Bard have revolutionized AI-driven text processing, enabling machines to generate text, translate languages, and analyze sentiment. These models are inspired by the human brain, but key differences remain. A new Technion – Israel Institute of Technology study, published in Nature Communications, explores these differences by examining how the brain processes spoken texts. The research, led by Prof. Roi Reichart and Dr. Refael Tikochinski from the…
Pop star Katy Perry and journalists Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez, who is also billionaire Jeff Bezos’ fiancée, are set to blast off into space on a Blue Origin rocket, marking the first all-female flight crew in more than six decades. The New Shepard rocket, a 59-foot tall (18-meter) suborbital spacecraft, will carry the crew to the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space, Bezos-owned Blue Origin said in a statement. Passengers will experience a few minutes of microgravity before returning to Earth via parachute-assisted landing in the West Texas desert. NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics researcher Amanda…
Over one hundred years ago, a few bold visionaries recognized the imperative to establish a nexus of research and technological advancement on Haifa’s Mount Carmel. The goal: to build the State of Israel physically and discover breakthroughs that would drive change around the world. From their determination came the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Film producer and director Uri Rosenwaks created the inspiring documentary “Technion 10²” to celebrate and reflect on the impact that the university has had on the State of Israel and beyond. As the documentary moves through the Jewish film festival circuit here in the United…
Israeli entrepreneur and investor Shmulik Bezalel has traveled the world and donated funds for research to find a treatment for his son Itay who has low-functioning autism spectrum disorder. Itay is one of 254 million children and adults worldwide struggling with neuropsychiatric disorders without a suitable treatment. Recognizing the limited therapeutic options for neuropsychiatric disorders, Bezalel teamed up with serial entrepreneur Boaz Goldman and neuroscientist Dr. Nisim Perets, and in 2021 founded an Israeli biotech startup with the vision to generate a simulation of the brain and test the efficacy of drugs. That startup, Itay & Beyond — named after…
“Fat is flavor” is a well-known culinary principle. But nutritional research suggests consuming too much animal fat may be a factor in the development of many health conditions from dementia to male infertility to Crohn’s disease. A cutting-edge plant protein-based fat solution, Fatrix, will soon go into commercial production to help food manufacturers reduce total fat and especially saturated fat content. The product’s developer, Israeli food-tech startup Gavan Technologies, has raised $8 million in a Series A round led by MoreVC of Israel with participation from Lever VC; EIT Food, a European Union-supported platform for sustainable food innovations; and DarkBoot…
Israeli clean-tech startup W-Cycle has partnered with Brazilian company Melhoramentos to develop a new compostable food packaging material that fully decomposes within 100 days. The strategic partnership aims to create an ecofriendly alternative to single-use plastics that can withstand extreme temperatures and provide robust food containment. W-Cycle’s proprietary material, SupraPulp, is made from agricultural waste products like sugarcane bagasse, eucalyptus wood fibers and banana leaves. The packaging is oil- and water-resistant and can endure temperatures ranging from minus -40°C to 220°C, making it suitable for freezer-to-oven use without requiring plastic lamination.
