The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Israeli startup aiOla recently won the “Best Speech to Text Solution” award at the 7th annual AI Breakthrough Awards that recognizes the world’s most innovative achievements in the artificial intelligence industry. The Herzliya-based company beat more than 5,000 nominees from over 20 countries to clinch the prestigious prize. Among AI Breakthrough’s previous winners are OpenAI and Deloitte. The company’s voice-capture technology combines natural language processing (NLP), which understands human language as it’s spoken and written, with automatic speech recognition, which uses AI to process human speech into readable text. Thanks to this advanced model, aiOla’s technology can recognize more than…
Many of us rely on the internet for images we need in our daily work or correspondence. But all too often, the search doesn’t always hit the mark — despite continuous advances in artificial intelligence. For instance, you need a picture of a female CEO but most of the images popping up are of men. You’d like to playfully send your girlfriend a picture of roses in her favorite color, lavender, but you can only find red. Better results could be coming your way, thanks to a team of Technion doctoral students and alumni working with Technion Assistant Professor Yonatan…
Modern medicine allows people to live longer and better, but with these life-enhancing therapies comes a risk of what clinicians call an adverse drug reaction (ADR) and laymen know as side effects. This is especially the case with polypharmacy (when patients take five or more drugs at the same time), says Liat Primor, veteran of the pharmaceutical industry and CEO and co-founder of FeelBetter, a startup dedicated to improving outcomes for patients taking multiple medications. “Sometimes patients have not only one condition, they have plenty – 10 or 15 – and they take so many medications,” Primor tells NoCamels. “They…
Back in ancient Greece, medical whiz kids like Hippocrates and Alcmaeon of Croton were hot on the idea that blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile — known as the body’s “humors” — held the keys to the kingdom of good health and a long life. While humorism theory has since fallen out of medical fashion, one of its core ideas has remained steadfast: There’s a lot to be gleaned from a closer look at the juices inside of our bodies. Those juices have so much potential, in fact, that in recent months medtech experts around the world and specifically…
An Israeli startup that uses AI to generate highly accurate transcripts and captions is working to preserve the testimonies of survivors of the Holocaust. Verbit says it is using a collection of “relevant and specific terms” relating to the Holocaust and the recollections of survivors to train its Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) platform. According to the company, this gives more accurate results, in particular when recording survivors who speak a range of languages in a variety of accents. The Givatayim-based startup is partnered on the project with the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (commonly known as the Claims…
Nvidia has agreed to acquire Israeli artificial intelligence (AI) company Deci. According to estimates obtained by Calcalist, the value of the deal is $300 million. In Deci’s last fundraising round in July 2022, it was valued at an estimated $200 million. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close during the second quarter. Nvidia confirmed the deal to Calcalist, stating that “NVIDIA’s expertise in AI will be complemented by Deci’s capabilities in NAS, which automates the design of deep learning models to improve performance. Deci’s engineering team has knowledge in NAS, Foundational Models, Inference and in…
Stav Cohen is a Ph.D. candidate in the Technion’s Faculty of Data and Decision Sciences. He is researching generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) methodologies, with a specific emphasis on security and operational aspects. He recently discovered, or rather created, a potential threat to GenAI systems. GenAI uses artificial intelligence to create unique content, including audio, code, images, text, simulations, and videos. This technology is becoming increasingly popular. It’s used to automatically make calendar bookings, create chat boxes on websites, write poetry and love songs, and more. But as these tools become more powerful and “intelligent,” there is also an increased danger…
Programs, apps and websites are all built using code that tells a computer, phone or other device what to do and how to do it. Actually creating that code is a tricky and complicated process, where even the smallest error can cause entire platforms to fail. Finding a mistake in rows of letters and numbers can be even harder and is extremely time consuming. In fact, software developers can spend up to 50 percent of their working hours testing and debugging code, according to well-respected trade magazine ACM Queue. But now an Israeli company has developed an AI “team member”…
The city that never sleeps is also, it seems, unable to take down scaffolding. New Yorkers have grown so sick of the ugly structures, and the accompanying ground-level cages in place to protect and divert pedestrians, that Eric Adams, the mayor, last year launched a campaign to clear them from the streets. Now computer scientists in the city have made a hit list of possible targets. Using ai to sift through thousands of hours of dashcam footage, the researchers identified some 5,000 scaffolding sites across all five boroughs, of which 500 were found to have no permit. “This city is the best…
Israeli AI-assisted colonoscopy technology has been given the seal of approval from the internationally respected Lancet Digital Health journal, following an extensive study of its capabilities. The novel polyp detection system developed by Haifa-based MAGENTIQ-EYE was studied by the Lancet over a 14-month period at 10 leading medical centers around the world, involving 31 endoscopists and 952 patients. The study, titled “A computer-aided polyp detection system in screening and surveillance colonoscopy: an international, multicentre, randomised, tandem trial,” found that the MAGNETIQ-EYE platform increases the average detection rate for adenoma (non-cancerous or pre-cancerous tumors) by 7 percent, and had a 17-percent lower rate of missed…
Israeli startup Wearable Devices is collaborating with US-based Qualcomm Technologies to integrate its touchless control solution into the latter’s development platform. The Mudra Band – an AI-powered wristband created by Wearable Devices – can be paired to any device via Bluetooth, and uses a combination of unique sensors and artificial intelligence to support touchless control of the Apple Watch. Users can toggle and switch between connected devices, including Mac computers, Apple TVs, smart glasses, and various mobile gaming systems. Mudra will be integrated into Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Spaces XR Developer Platform, which allows developers to create applications for devices that use virtual and augmented reality…
Emma Pierson, assistant professor of computer science at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech, is one of 19 researchers who have been awarded an AI2050 Early Career Fellowship from Schmidt Sciences for her work seeking to use artificial intelligence to promote equity. Pierson, also a computer science field member at the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, is working on “Using LLMs (large-language models) for Health Equity.” As a member of the second cohort of Early Career Fellows, she will receive $300,000 over two years from Schmidt Sciences to further her work related to artificial intelligence and health care.
