CT + AI = 30% Fewer Fatalities

September 27, 2023

Machine-learning analysis of CT scans during admission to the emergency enables earlier detection of intracerebral hemorrhages and reduces mortality rate by over 30 percent, according to a study published in the International Journal of Emergency Medicine. Intracerebral hemorrhage, commonly known as bleeding into the brain, is the second most common cause of strokes (15-30%) and the most deadly. The research, conducted by Dr. David Orion, director of the Acute Stroke & Neuro-Endovascular Department of Sheba Medical Center in Israel, involved 587 patients and used Aidoc’s algorithm to analyze CT scans of their heads.

How a Stutter Sparked a Startup

September 21, 2023

Moshe, a computer programmer who suffers from a life-long stutter, tried every kind of treatment to ease the jaw spasms, severe facial twitches and feelings of suffocation he experienced whenever he spoke. But every time he’d step out of a clinic or treatment center, he had no way of preserving the methods he had just been taught to manage his condition. That’s when he decided to use his technological skills to develop an algorithm capable of analyzing and monitoring his speech to ensure he was practicing these various stuttering techniques correctly. Six years later, he joined forces with speech language…

The Nanomedicine AI Matchmaker

September 13, 2023

Researchers have developed a pioneering AI “matchmaker” that pairs together existing cancer drugs for use in nanomedicine. Prescribing a combination of two or more medications is already an established practice – known as combination therapy — that can prove highly effective. But a team at Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, in Haifa, has gone beyond simply identifying separate medications that will work well together.

Pathologist Level Cancer Detection, by Machine

August 18, 2023

When clinical pathologists look at images of cells from a patient biopsy, they perceive things the rest of us cannot. Where we see bright pink blobs and dots of purplish blue, they can make out the hallmarks of cancerous disease. But show the same images to a computer souped up with artificial intelligence in Professor Ron Kimmel’s Geometric Image Processing Lab at the Technion, and it can discern data that is invisible even to the most highly trained human eye. The Technion is the top-ranked institution for machine learning in Europe and the Middle East. Prof. Kimmel’s group is investigating…

Technion Shines in Latest Global Rankings

August 15, 2023

Placing 79th globally and 4th among European technological universities, the Technion continued its climb upward in the newest iteration of the Shanghai Ranking, considered the foremost ranking of the world’s top 1,000 universities. The Technion’s ascent from 83rd position last year and 94th two years ago is just one more indication of the increasing influence of the Technion on the world stage. In the field of artificial intelligence, the Technion has been ranked #1 in Europe for the last two years by another prestigious organization, CSRankings.   “By addressing the grand challenges of the 21st century, the Technion will continue…

The Robot that Cleans Outdoor Wooden Decks

August 09, 2023

Gal Frenkel built a wooden deck and pool in the backyard of his home in central Israel the summer after he had sold luxury wedding/bar mitzvah event planner Sky Productions (opening price for an event: $1 million). Frenkel hosted a few parties there, and after the summer he didn’t think much about his pool and deck. When he went out to look at it the following spring, he was shocked. “The whole area looked old and ruined and faded. I was so disappointed,” he tells ISRAEL21c. “I called the guy who installed the deck and said, ‘Nadav, you really messed it up.’…

Aico Robot Boosts Kids’ Language Skills

July 27, 2023

Common pedagogical wisdom states that the younger a child begins learning a new language, the easier it is for them to acquire. And adhering to that philosophy, Israeli startup Curiosity Robotics has created a friendly, chatty little robot to teach English as a foreign language to preschoolers. Meet Aico, the charming, smiling artificial intelligence teaching tool that is the product of three years of research at Tel Aviv University’s Curiosity Labs. Aico is programmed to use a teaching method devised by British-Israeli educator Helen Doron, which advocates for children starting to learn a second language as early as three months of age. Curiosity Robotics is a…

Dubbing Startup Makes Actors Multilingual

July 18, 2023

An emerging field of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology has elevated voice dubbing to a new level—one where English-speaking acting icons can indeed appear to speak their famous lines in fluent Spanish or Greek or even Russian. Voice dubbing is when a new voice replaces the original voice for a role, usually to translate the content into another language and an Israeli startup is leading the way, thanks to its artificial intelligence platform. Traditional voice dubbing studios can take up to months to produce dubbed versions of content, with a complex duplication process that includes finding the right voice actor and…

Can ChatGPT Write a GOOD Paper?

July 07, 2023

A pair of scientists has produced a research paper in less than an hour with the help of ChatGPT — a tool driven by artificial intelligence (AI) that can understand and generate human-like text. The article was fluent, insightful and presented in the expected structure for a scientific paper, but researchers say that there are many hurdles to overcome before the tool can be truly helpful. The goal was to explore ChatGPT’s capabilities as a research ‘co-pilot’ and spark debate about its advantages and pitfalls, says Roy Kishony, a biologist and data scientist at the Technion — Israel Institute of Technology in…

Meet the Beehives Powered by AI

March 05, 2023

BeeHero, an Israeli startup that uses sensors to collect big data from beehives, is increasing bee-related research across California, USA, with 14 new research stations. The data from each station determines beehive health and predicts crop yields and the company is posting free daily updates on pollination progress to help beekeepers and almond growers. Each research station consists of bee counters (to measure real flying times and the actual number of bee foraging trips), hive scales (to track nectar-foraging activity), weather sensors, cameras, and BeeHero’s patented inhive sensors. They will allow additional growers, beekeepers, agronomists, and ag retailers around the world…

Can This Gadget Fix Reading Struggles?

March 21, 2023

OrCam is already one of Israel’s startup successes, with a device that literally helps the blind to “see”. It reads text to the user – anything from a newspaper to a cereal packet. It also recognizes people, identifies objects, and helps the user find their way around. The Jerusalem-based company was established by Prof. Amnon Shashua and Ziv Aviram, founders of Mobileye, the driver assistance system that Intel bought in 2017 for $15.3 billion. OrCam launched MyEye for blind and visually impaired people in 2015 and has now refined its technology to help children with dyslexia, ADHD and other special…

AI Writing Tools Might Be Writing You

May 17, 2023

AI-powered writing assistants such as ChatGPT are creeping into everything from office tools to search tools – but using them actually puts ideas into people’s heads. Researchers found that people using an AI writing tool programmed with one idea (that social media is good, for example) are twice as likely to write a paragraph agreeing with the assistant. Maurice Jakesch of Cornell University asked more than 1,500 participants to write a paragraph answering the question, “Is social media good for society?” People who used an AI writing assistant that was biassed for or against social media were twice as likely to write a…
