The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Professor Shulamit Levenberg of the Technion Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, director of both the Technion Center for 3D Bioprinting and the Rina & Avner Schneur Center for Diabetes Research, was recently chosen as a fellow of the American National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Her nomination will be officially announced during NAI’s annual conference in North Carolina in June. Prof. Levenberg is among a handful of Israeli women scientists who have created the most innovative technologies and has registered dozens of patents. She has founded several startups, including Aleph Farms, which creates cultivated steak using cattle cells with no harm to…
More than 250,000 Israelis are refugees in their own land, having been evacuated from the north and south of the country due to the Israel-Hamas war in the south and threats from Hezbollah in the north. The Technion is providing many with housing and other services and is offering a one-week robophysics program for outstanding 11th- and 12th-graders who have been displaced. Partnering with Atidim, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities to bright young people from Israel’s underserved and marginalized communities, 30 high school students participated in a robophysics program created by the Technion’s Andrew and Erna Viterbi…
An Israeli startup that uses artificial intelligence to dub movies and TV shows into different languages has launched the first initiative of its kind to provide fair compensation to voice actors for the use of their voices in AI-powered dubbing and other synthetic voice projects. Deepdub uses proprietary AI to generate synthetic voices that capture the emotion and delivery of the original performances, but in a new language. The technology streamlines the labor-intensive dubbing process and reduces costs, while matching the quality of traditional workflows. Now, the startup’s new Voice Artist Royalty Program will save the submitted audio samples of voice actors in…
The Fluidic Telescope (FLUTE) project team, jointly led by NASA and Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, envisions a way to make huge circular self-healing mirrors in-orbit to further the field of astronomy.Larger telescopes collect more light, and they allow astronomers to peer farther into space and see distant objects in greater detail. The state-of-the-art 21 foot (6.5 meter) aperture James Webb Space Telescope needed to be folded up origami-style – including the mirror itself – to fit inside the rocket for its ride to space. The aperture of an optical space observatory refers to the size of the telescope’s primary…
Cornell Tech and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) announced the launch of Pilot: New York City to advance New York City as a global hub for urban innovation. The new initiative, a key proposal within the “New” New York Panel Making New York Work for Everyone Action Plan, aims to streamline processes, collaborate with the private sector, nonprofits, and academia, and tap into the creativity of New Yorkers, to enable the city to become one of the world’s most important places to pilot and scale urban innovation ranging from curbside electric vehicle charging to building decarbonization technology. Together with the…
A young couple guarding Israel’s frontline with Lebanon got married today as they prepare for Hezbollah to attack. Hila Elbaz, 25, a university student and Kfir Asor, 25, an engineer in the Air Force, had planned a lavish wedding ceremony on Monday October 22 to be attended by family and friends in their home town of Haifa. But the pair were both called up to defend Israel’s northern front following the deadly October 7 Hamas attack on Jewish settlements close to the Gaza Strip.
Avi Aflalo, Simplex 3D co-founder and CEO: “We have accurate 3D models of most cities, towns and villages in Israel. The initiative will open the technology to communities that have not yet been modeled to be up and running within a few days with a defense system to manage emergency incidents, with either a three-dimensional model or a standard map.” Simplex 3D develops systems and algorithms for 3D urban management and planning for the private, and government and defense sectors. The company is harnessing its technology for the benefit of all local authorities and communities in Israel, to strengthen the…
“When you look at electricity production, you realize renewable energy has already arrived,” Yonadav Buber tells ISRAEL21c. “The cost of renewable energy production is already competing with that of coal and natural gas. The only reason we haven’t yet become dependent on renewable energy is that it works whenever it wants – you can’t turn on the sun at night or make the wind blow.” There are lots of companies examining ways to store renewable energy to make it more available. “But I always think that the simplest solution is also the best one,” Buber says.
A team of mechanical engineers at Cornell University, working with a colleague from Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, has designed and built a tiny robot that is powered by a combustion engine. In their paper published in the journal Science, the group describes how they built their tiny engine and possible uses for it. Ryan Truby, with Northwestern University, has published a Perspective piece in the same journal issue outlining the work done by the team on this new effort. Over the past several decades, roboticists have designed and built ever-smaller robots with the goal of finding a design that can…
A unique “coworking space” for farmers in drought-stricken Rwanda will soon offer local growers a sustainable way to produce crops. Agriculture accounts for a third of landlocked Rwanda’s GDP but relies on rainfall and suffers low levels of productivity. The unique site, including its purpose-built water source and an energy network, was designed by Israeli precision irrigation pioneer Netafim and built in cooperation with the government, which provided $50 million in funding.
Private space companies like Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc. and Blue Origin could provide a significant booHow Pst to the speed and frequency of space research projects, according to Moran Bercovici, a mechanical engineering professor at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Bercovici is involved in the Fluidic Telescope Experiment (FLUTE) with NASA, which aims to revolutionize space astronomy. He feels that private space companies have a great deal to offer scientific research. “They make space more accessible to research teams around the world,” he told MarketWatch. “In the future, the private companies have all the incentives to streamline this…
Maya Goldshlager served the Israeli Air Force with distinction, providing instruction on operating the Iron Dome defense system. Her contribution felt so meaningful, she said, “it led me to choose a degree that would combine science and technology to impact people’s lives.” As an undergraduate in the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering at the Technion, Ms. Goldshlager is already making waves. Participating in her faculty’s hackathon, a competition to find solutions to real-life problems, Ms. Goldshlager created prototypes of two new medical tools: one to treat multiple sclerosis (MS) and the other for urinary tract infections (UTIs). “It was a great…
