Israeli startup Wearable Devices is collaborating with US-based Qualcomm Technologies to integrate its touchless control solution into the latter’s development platform. The Mudra Band – an AI-powered wristband created by Wearable Devices – can be paired to any device via Bluetooth, and uses a combination of unique sensors and artificial intelligence to support touchless control of the Apple Watch. Users can toggle and switch between connected devices, including Mac computers, Apple TVs, smart glasses, and various mobile gaming systems. One Israeli startup has developed a solution that keeps fruits and vegetables fresh for longer without changing or adding anything to the produce themselves. Ness Ziona-based Liva has developed a sticker that when applied to the package, can extend the freshness of fruits and vegetables for up to another seven days. Techsomed, a medical imaging startup, allows physicians for the first time to see exactly what’s happening in real time while they destroy (or ablate) a tumor using targeted heat through a needle. Thermal ablation therapy, a minimally invasive procedure for small tumors, has huge benefits over surgery or chemotherapy for the patients.
An award of $1.3 million has been split between seven Israeli climate tech startups as part of the startup category of the Climate Solution Prize, an initiative created to encourage innovation in this field. The selection for the track was carried out by Startup Nation Central, a Tel Aviv-based nonprofit dedicated to promoting Israeli innovation, and the Climate Solutions Prize Organization. American non-profit health insurer Highmark has added an Israeli migraine treatment band to the items covered by its insurance policies. The Nerivio Remote Electrical Neuromodulation (REN) migraine band, developed by Netanya-based Theranica, is placed on the upper arm as soon as a migraine starts (or even used as a preventative measure), and vibrates at an intensity just below the patient’s pain threshold. It causes nerve fibers in the body to deliver a message to the brain, where it decides that the sensation is harmless and releases neurotransmitters to prevent the sufferer from feeling pain – including in their head. A study by GrayMatters Health, which develops digital training therapies to help the brain regulate mental health care, has shown that its FDA-approved Prism device is effective in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The device, now available in selected clinics in the US, shows a patient’s brain activity in the amygdala, the small region of the brain associated with emotions and memory, while interacting with different scenarios. This can help patients with PTSD control their symptoms by better understanding what triggers that heightened activity in that part of the brain.
A frustrating experience as a caregiver for her then-boyfriend with cancer made Maayan Cohen realize that non-medical personnel in a medical setting needed help understanding the information in front of them. Despite dutifully tracking his treatment herself, Cohen realized that noting down his vitals in a binder full of papers was not helping her understand his condition or manage his medical records. Many others in a similar situation, she realized, were also tracking the vital signs of sick loved ones. But without a doctor at hand, it was hard to know what could help or hinder the condition.
By the time Sara Smolley was born, her grandmother was unable to talk to her.
