The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Since opening its doors in 1924, the Technion has helped build Israel, safeguard its citizens, and prepare for the future. To commemorate a century of dreams dreamed — and often fulfilled — the American Technion Society (ATS) held events across the nation recognizing Technion achievements and ATS donors whose philanthropic fingerprints are on buildings, laboratories, and programs throughout campus. “Each of you in his own individual way is determining the development of this University,” said President Professor Uri Sivan during an event on April 9 in New York City. “Without your support, none of this would have been possible.” While…
Ten days after the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War in 1973, Stephen B. Klein visited Israel with his father, Raymond, and his brother, Warren. They spent the first day in the field, escorted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and later visited a hospital to talk with wounded soldiers. “I walked into a room and there was a young man who had lost his leg above the knee,” Klein recalled. “We were similar in age and profession. He was an accountant, and I was a businessman. We both had kids. I realized I could have been in that bed….
After three decades working as a psychiatrist, Irene Kitzman enjoys spending her semiretirement behind a telescope, gazing into distant stars and galaxies from her home in Arizona. Her passion for astronomy has inspired Kitzman to support Technion research that aims to provide humanity with even deeper glimpses into the cosmos. By leveraging her individual retirement account (IRA), she is funding Technion astronomy research now while making provisions for further support after her lifetime — and, in the process, sparing her retirement savings from taxation. Kitzman supports this research using annual distributions from her IRA. Like all individuals with an IRA…
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology with a few of my friends and colleagues at the American Technion Society (ATS) to show solidarity for our peers in Israel and learn more about how things have changed over the last several months. It was immediately clear to all of us how quickly everyone in the north adapted to new challenges that come with wartime, and we were all impressed with how the Technion has rallied around its students and faculty – particularly the thousands who have been called to service. I spoke with…
Congratulations to multi-generational Technion supporters Robert Davis and Stephen Seiden, who received honorary fellowships from the Technion for their long-term commitment and generosity to the University. The two were recognized at a moving ceremony June 3 during the 2024 Board of Governors meeting on the campus in Haifa. This year’s meeting, aptly called a “Solidarity Board,” was more modest than previous years, due to October 7. But the smaller attendance helped to deepen the interaction among attendees. “Many of the Technion’s friends came to the Board of Governors’ meeting from near and far, despite the situation,” said Technion President Professor…
At the Jerusalem Post 2024 Annual Conference, Steven Fuld, a member of the Board of Directors for the American Technion Society (ATS), spoke about the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology as Israel’s “beacon of innovation nestled in the hills of Haifa.” Fuld noted the ATS’s substantial financial contributions to support advanced science and technology […]
In early March, a small group of dedicated American Technion Society National Board members traveled to Israel on a Solidarity and Science Trip in support of the courageous students and faculty of the Technion who have faced unthinkable challenges since the events of October 7. The intense three-day visit was deeply significant and profoundly memorable. “We came to Israel at this time not merely as observers but as pillars of unwavering support for the Technion and unity with the entire nation,” said Mark Gaines, ATS national president. “Some of the stories we heard were horrible; some were inspiring, but all…

On Saturday, October 6, 1973, Eddie Rabinovitch ’75 and Marianna Shapiro ’77 had just mailed their last batch of wedding invitations when suddenly they noticed cars on the street — unusual in Israel on Shabbat and Yom Kippur. The radio, typically silent on the Sabbath, broke the news: Egypt and Syria had staged a surprise attack on Israel in the north and the south, starting the Yom Kippur War. They had planned a festive evening wedding but due to blackout restrictions, settled on a daytime event without music or dancing. A week after their November 1 wedding Eddie was deployed…
Dr. Ira and Chana Green came of age in the wake of the Holocaust and appreciate the role Israel has played as the homeland for the Jewish people. They take pride in how the country evolved from a desert to an agrarian oasis, and then into an epicenter of high technology, medical advances, and sustainable practices. To ensure Israel’s prosperity amid threats to its security, the Oxnard, Calif., couple designated their estate to defense research. “We see our support for the Technion as an investment in a country that is not only a wellspring of innovation, but also central to…
Chicago Technion Innovators is a vibrant two-year program designed to educate future American Technion Society (ATS) leaders about the impact of the Technion. Each cohort consists of emerging leaders within the Chicago community interested in supporting Israel and its technological innovation, and in ensuring the future of the ATS. Innovators attend in-person and virtual events with faculty, students, and alumni to learn about the Technion’s cutting-edge research and its important place in Israel’s history. Graduates are invited to serve on Chicago’s local leadership board, and over time may assume national leadership positions. The following interview was conducted with program co-founders…
Lynda and Stewart Resnick, co-owners of California-based The Wonderful Company, have pledged $50 million to transform the Technion’s research of sustainability and catalysis. The Stewart and Lynda Resnick Sustainability Center for Catalysis will recruit scientists and promote research collaborations with industry to uncover new ways to maintain global population growth while protecting the planet for future generations. “The Resnicks’ philanthropic vision demands forward-thinking action to preserve and protect our planet,” said Michael Waxman-Lenz, CEO of the American Technion Society. Rapid population growth and longer life expectancies are projected to result in more than 10 billion people living on Earth in…
