Technion Joins Harvard, Stanford, and Berkeley in Top 10

The Technion now ranks among the world’s top ten universities for entrepreneurial success among undergraduate alumni, joining Harvard, Stanford, and Berkeley in this esteemed cohort.

The annual ranking by PitchBook, which measures entrepreneurial success among university alumni worldwide, places the Technion in 10th place globally for the number of bachelor’s degree graduates who founded companies.

The accolade affirms the Technion’s role as a driver of Israel’s economic strength. Technion graduates tend to remain in Israel, where they make a disproportional impact on the local economy. Remarkably, Technion alumni are the founders or managers of 56% of the Israeli companies traded on NASDAQ.

“Since its founding, the Technion has made it its mission to combine basic science with applied research,” said Technion President Prof. Uri Sivan. “Technion alumni are the main economic engine of the State of Israel and are largely responsible for the creation of Israel’s ‘Startup Nation.’”

Technion graduates with a bachelor’s degree have a high likelihood of founding companies—the highest in Israel, and one of the highest globally, as measured by the ratio of alumni entrepreneurs to alumni cohort size. According to PitchBook’s report, based on data from the past decade, Technion graduates (across all degree levels) have founded more than 1,000 companies, led by approximately 1,300 entrepreneurs, which have raised more than $43 billion. The success is particularly notable among bachelor’s degree graduates, who founded about 670 companies, raising more than $26 billion collectively.

The list for graduates with a bachelor’s degree is led by American universities: Berkeley (#1), Stanford (#2), and Harvard (#3). The Technion and Tel Aviv University are the only non-American institutions in the global top ten.

In recent years, explained President Sivan, the Technion has expanded and deepened entrepreneurship studies for undergraduates. t:hub—the Technion’s hub for innovation and entrepreneurship—supports students and other communities in realizing their entrepreneurial ideas. T3, the Technion’s commercialization arm, helps identify technologies with commercial potential at the Technion and connects researchers with industry, leading companies, and entrepreneurs.

President Prof. Sivan said, “These activities foster entrepreneurship within the student and research community and strengthen the bond between the Technion and industry–one of our central strategic goals today.”

Since its inception, Technion faculty and alumni have been the driving force behind many of Israel’s most prominent industries, including defense, aerospace, FoodTech, chemicals, civil infrastructure, electronics, nanotechnology, and quantum.
