ATS employs a staff of 60 + that work from New York and in regional offices across the United States.
YOUR ROLE
The Staff Accountant plays a important role in ATS’s financial operations, exercising professional judgment in the preparation, analysis, and interpretation of financial information. This position is responsible for executing and improving core accounting functions, overseeing investment tracking, supporting grant compliance and donor fund management, and preparing for audits. The role involves working independently and collaboratively to support organizational decision-making and ensure the integrity of financial data and processes.
SKILLS and STRENGTHS
- Lead general ledger accounting functions, including preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close activities.
- Analyze investment activity and prepare internal reports in coordination with external investment managers and custodians.
- Manage restricted and unrestricted grant accounting to ensure alignment with donor agreements and compliance with organizational policies.
- Prepare financial schedules, working papers, and supporting documentation for the annual audit and serve as a point of contact for external auditors.
- Interpret and maintain records related to fund allocations, including oversight of endowment activity and donor-restricted fund reporting.
- Provide financial reports and tailored analyses to internal stakeholders and senior leadership to inform planning and strategy.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including development and program staff, to ensure accurate revenue recognition and financial reporting.
- Evaluate and implement improvements to accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls, ensuring compliance with best practices and audit standards.
- Exercise discretion and independent judgment in problem-solving and in recommending solutions to complex accounting issues.
- Lead or contribute to ad hoc financial projects and strategic initiatives as assigned.
Ideal Candidate
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA or CPA-track preferred.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance roles.
- Demonstrated ability to apply accounting principles with sound professional judgment.
- Experience preparing financial statements, reconciliations, and analyses independently.
- Skilled in Microsoft Excel; familiarity with PowerPoint and accounting software such as Blackbaud Financial Edge is a plus.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented with a proactive approach to managing tasks and deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally and influence without authority.
