The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Photonics Pioneer Reflects on Her Journey to Success Professor Michal Lipson ’92, M.S. ’95, Ph.D. ’98, is the Eugene Higgins Professor of Electrical Engineering and Professor of Applied Physics at Columbia University, president-elect of the Optical Society, a 2010 MacArthur Fellow, and a pioneer in the field of nanophotonics. More than 1,000 papers published yearly involve devices and circuits based on her research. The Technion is family, as her father and father-in-law were both professors at the university. In 2021, you became the first woman to receive the John Tyndall Award for outstanding contributions to optical-fiber technology. What inspired you to…
Technion’s Ties to Industry Helped Her Become a Biotech Leader Iris Grossman always thought she’d become a neurologist, but as a Ph.D. candidate at the Technion, she worked closely with Teva Pharmaceuticals and fell in love with personalized medicine. Her expertise in science and analytics has opened doors to high-level positions and consultancies at Teva, GlaxoSmithKline, Eli Lilly, and Takeda, as well as chief scientific officer roles at CAMP4 Therapeutics and Amide Technologies. Currently, she is chief strategy officer at the Israeli-British Eleven Therapeutics. Dr. Grossman, a modern Orthodox mother of four who currently resides in Boston, is part of…
Every so often the Technion is fortunate enough to receive support from parents, children, and even grandchildren of the same family. Since each generation has a different perspective on giving, this multigenerational approach embraces individual motivations and helps ensure continued philanthropy for years to come. Such is the case with Technion graduates Joseph Newman ’67, M.S. ’68, and his son, Amir Neeman MBA ’02. Joseph Newman grew up without means and is now in the position to give back. In July 2021, he made an extremely generous contribution to the Technion as thanks for a scholarship some 50-plus years ago…
Whether lured by Stanford University, tech startups, or California sunshine and cypress trees, many Israelis living in the U.S. have made Silicon Valley a second home. By some estimates, there are upwards of 2,000 Technion alumni in Silicon Valley, many holding senior positions in engineering, operations management, and investment management. “They are making a significant […]
There is no guarantee for preventing stroke, but eating healthy, exercising, and regular medical check-ups go a long way. Now it seems we can reduce stroke risks even more with computer science. Two Technion master’s degree students have written a machine learning algorithm that can accurately predict whether a person will develop the irregular heart rhythm atrial fibrillation (AFib) — a condition that causes one in seven strokes. Working under the supervision of Assistant Professor Joachim A. Behar, head of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in Medicine, Shany Biton and Sheina Gendelman accessed more than one million ECG recordings from more…
Guiding a medical needle through the body to do biopsies and other treatment is not an easy task. Straight needles work when the path is a straight shot, but often the target is hidden behind bones or vulnerable tissue. In recent years scientists have developed medical needles with beveled tips and algorithms to direct the needles, but the procedure is still risky. Now a team from the Technion and the University of North Carolina have developed a new algorithm that hopes to make the task safer and more precise.
Due to the scarcity of organ donors, many of the nearly 92,000 Americans awaiting kidney donations will not survive the transplant wait list. Now, a collaborative partnership to produce 3D printed kidneys is aimed at reducing wait times in the U.S. and around the world. Israeli-based CollPlant Biotechnologies, led by Technion alum Yechiel Tal ’79, M.S.’82, is working with United Therapeutics Corporation to manufacture artificial kidneys by combining CollPlant’s unique tobacco-based platform with its BioInk technology. In preparation for entering production, the companies have, ironically, turned a former tobacco plant into a modern 3D bioprinting factory. “We are excited to…
Scientists from the Technion have found a way to rejuvenate the aging process of the body’s immune system. Professor Doron Melamed, principal investigator in the Richard and Kenneth Skodnek Developmental Immunology and Aging Research Laboratory, and doctoral student Reem Dowery sought to understand why the elderly population is more susceptible to severe cases of COVID-19 and why the vaccines seem to be less effective and wane faster among this population. The results of their work were published recently in the peer-reviewed, online medical journal Blood. The secret begins with B cells, also known as B lymphocytes, which protect us from…
The Israeli company Bonus BioGroup, co-founded by Technion alumnus Shai Meretzki, has been given the green light to expand use of its innovative COVID treatment after severely ill patients showed dramatic results earlier this year. Dr. Meretzki earned dual bachelor’s degrees from the Technion in 1996 in both chemical engineering and biology, and his master’s and Ph.D. degrees — also from the Technion — in biotechnology in 1999 and 2002, respectively. Just one day after taking their last dose of Bonus Biogroup’s MesenCure, 10 patients were well enough to be released from Israel’s Rambam Hospital. Chest x-rays showed a drop…
Professor Shulamit Levenberg’s work in cultivated meat has caught the eye of one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors: Leonardo DiCaprio. The actor and environmental activist recently invested an undisclosed sum in Prof. Levenberg’s Aleph Farms as part of the startup’s recent $105 million funding round. “One of the most impactful ways to combat the climate crisis is to transform our food system,” said DiCaprio, who has funded an array of environmental causes including lion recovery and is part of the billionaire-funded nonprofit Earth Alliance. He will become an advisor and investor to both Aleph Farms, which cultivates eco-friendly steak from…
