The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Israeli AI-assisted colonoscopy technology has been given the seal of approval from the internationally respected Lancet Digital Health journal, following an extensive study of its capabilities. The novel polyp detection system developed by Haifa-based MAGENTIQ-EYE was studied by the Lancet over a 14-month period at 10 leading medical centers around the world, involving 31 endoscopists and 952 patients. The study, titled “A computer-aided polyp detection system in screening and surveillance colonoscopy: an international, multicentre, randomised, tandem trial,” found that the MAGNETIQ-EYE platform increases the average detection rate for adenoma (non-cancerous or pre-cancerous tumors) by 7 percent, and had a 17-percent lower rate of missed…
Israeli startup Wearable Devices is collaborating with US-based Qualcomm Technologies to integrate its touchless control solution into the latter’s development platform. The Mudra Band – an AI-powered wristband created by Wearable Devices – can be paired to any device via Bluetooth, and uses a combination of unique sensors and artificial intelligence to support touchless control of the Apple Watch. Users can toggle and switch between connected devices, including Mac computers, Apple TVs, smart glasses, and various mobile gaming systems. Mudra will be integrated into Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Spaces XR Developer Platform, which allows developers to create applications for devices that use virtual and augmented reality…
Emma Pierson, assistant professor of computer science at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech, is one of 19 researchers who have been awarded an AI2050 Early Career Fellowship from Schmidt Sciences for her work seeking to use artificial intelligence to promote equity. Pierson, also a computer science field member at the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, is working on “Using LLMs (large-language models) for Health Equity.” As a member of the second cohort of Early Career Fellows, she will receive $300,000 over two years from Schmidt Sciences to further her work related to artificial intelligence and health care.
The car industry is pretty conservative and it’s usually led by men. This gives Michal Geva an entrepreneurial edge. Geva is the general manager of Harman Automotive Israel and the general manager for OTA (over the air) and cybersecurity at Harman International. She became associated with Harman some 10 years ago, when she joined Israeli startup Red Bend just before it evolved into Harman Israel upon being purchased by Harman, an automotive electronics technology company and a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics. “We do software updates for cars,” she explains to ISRAEL21c. “Think of how you update the software for your phone – the same goes…
Buying produce, and then having it quickly go bad, is a common disappointment for many. One Israeli startup has developed a solution that keeps fruits and vegetables fresh for longer without changing or adding anything to the produce themselves. Ness Ziona-based Liva has developed a sticker that when applied to the package, can extend the freshness of fruits and vegetables for up to another seven days. The sticker was created by Ifat Hammer, co-founder and CTO, drawing on her expertise in food engineering and biotechnology. She figured that instead of modifying the produce itself, “good” bacteria that was already present in the…
Hours in surgery, weeks in hospitals and months of recuperation – or a five-minute procedure under local anesthesia and straight back home with no side effects. That’s the difference that AI (artificial intelligence) developed in Israel will now be making for patients diagnosed with liver cancer. Techsomed, a medical imaging startup, allows physicians for the first time to see exactly what’s happening in real time while they destroy (or ablate) a tumor using targeted heat through a needle. Thermal ablation therapy, a minimally invasive procedure for small tumors, has huge benefits over surgery or chemotherapy for the patients.
An award of $1.3 million has been split between seven Israeli climate tech startups as part of the startup category of the Climate Solution Prize, an initiative created to encourage innovation in this field. The selection for the track was carried out by Startup Nation Central, a Tel Aviv-based nonprofit dedicated to promoting Israeli innovation, and the Climate Solutions Prize Organization. The winners include: Filo System, whose data compression engine provides storage and networking saving, which lowers energy consumption and cooling cost for data centers; TIGI Solar CEO Zvika Klier is a Technion alumnus.
Going from development on Israel’s world famous Iron Dome missile defense system to maximizing energy usage might sound a little odd, but to Ron Halpern, chief commercial officer at mPrest, the software company behind the platform, the transition was a natural one. “Iron Dome essentially is a real-time distributed asset optimization system; the assets happened to be interceptors,” Halpern tells NoCamels. mPrest CEO and Founder Natan Barak and CTO Noam Arbel are Technion alumni. Iron Dome was developed in large part by Technion alumni working at Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.
A sensor that measures the “heartbeat” of a plant is being used by farmers around the world to optimize the growing process, most notably how much water it needs, at a time when weather patterns are shifting and becoming unpredictable due to climate change. Almost all plants, big and small, rely on the process of photosynthesis (using light, carbon dioxide and water to produce oxygen and energy), and the correct conditions are crucial for its survival. But for farmers, knowing how much water to give each plant can be an inexact science, with agriculturalists generally relying on experience and intuition…
American non-profit health insurer Highmark has added an Israeli migraine treatment band to the items covered by its insurance policies. The Nerivio Remote Electrical Neuromodulation (REN) migraine band, developed by Netanya-based Theranica, is placed on the upper arm as soon as a migraine starts (or even used as a preventative measure), and vibrates at an intensity just below the patient’s pain threshold. It causes nerve fibers in the body to deliver a message to the brain, where it decides that the sensation is harmless and releases neurotransmitters to prevent the sufferer from feeling pain – including in their head. The…
Ra’anana-based Inspira Technologies today announced the signing of a non-binding Letter of Intent with Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh), a step the company hopes will lead to providing better respiratory care both here in Israel and in the global community. “With the anticipated FDA approval on the horizon, I am confident that this prospective collaboration with Shamir Medical Center will enhance the efficacy of life-support care and establish a pathway for its adoption in both local and international markets,” president of Inspira Technologies Joe Hayo said in a press release. The Letter of Intent (LOI) with Shamir will test the performance of the INSPIRA…
Soon, cancer patients will have an additional treatment option, moving away from relying solely on chemotherapy, which often has deleterious side effects. The current one-size-fits-all approach to treating many diseases will soon be replaced by personalized (or precision) medicine. Essentially, the patient’s DNA will be sequenced, to analyze subclass diseases and identify the cause of the mutation. With a better understanding of disease mechanisms, patients can be diagnosed with great precision and the treatment can be tailored specifically to the target. For breast cancer alone, there will be more than 20 drugs designed to cure each specific type. Thai PBS…
