When the world stopped due to the pandemic, so, too, did plans to explore outer space. In 2019, NASA had five missions scheduled for the next three years, which were halted due to COVID. With NASA behind schedule, Israeli-American scientist Eliad Peretz helped put the organization back on track. Peretz, 40, is the mission and instrument scientist for NASA’s Heliophysics Science Division at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center In Greenbelt. BeeHero, an Israeli startup that uses sensors to collect big data from beehives, is increasing bee-related research across California, USA, with 14 new research stations. The data from each station determines beehive health and predicts crop yields and the company is posting free daily updates on pollination progress to help beekeepers and almond growers. Each research station consists of bee counters (to measure real flying times and the actual number of bee foraging trips), hive scales (to track nectar-foraging activity), weather sensors, cameras, and BeeHero’s patented inhive sensors. OrCam is already one of Israel’s startup successes, with a device that literally helps the blind to “see”. It reads text to the user – anything from a newspaper to a cereal packet. In a move aimed at revolutionizing the manufacturing sector, the Economy and Industry Ministry, in partnership with the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, launched an initiative to enhance the research and development efforts of manufacturing plants across the country. Turning fresh air into water seemed like nothing short of a miracle back in 2012. That was when Israeli startup Watergen revealed its first atmospheric water generator to the world. Watergen cools air, much like an air conditioner, until it condenses and becomes water. But technology moves on apace. One of the things that sets the quantum world apart from our everyday classical one is the capacity for entanglement—when two or more objects share an invisible connection that entwines their fates. Entanglement is the most extreme version of a quantum connection, where measuring one particle can tell you everything you need to know about another. Short of that, particles can still sync up in decidedly quantum ways, where measuring one particle will give you some incomplete information about another. There was a time, not so long ago, when worried Israelis would listen out for daily updates on the water level of the Sea of Galilee (or the Kinneret, as it is known in Hebrew). It’s the country’s only significant freshwater lake and was, until recently, its primary source of water. Titanium-air batteries have been recently tested by a team of scientists from Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and Forschungszentrum Jülich, and the results are promising. These batteries have the potential to store up to three times more energy than standard batteries, making them a great candidate to replace current zinc-air batteries used in small devices such as hearing aids and other sensors. AI-powered writing assistants such as ChatGPT are creeping into everything from office tools to search tools – but using them actually puts ideas into people’s heads. Researchers found that people using an AI writing tool programmed with one idea (that social media is good, for example) are twice as likely to write a paragraph agreeing with the assistant.
