The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Pictured Above / Professor Reut Shalgi Researchers at the Technion’s Rappaport Faculty of Medicine have discovered that the body has the capability of curing various neurodegenerative diseases, including Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s, and ALS. Unfortunately, however, the body often fails to detect the problem and activate the solution. Professor Reut Shalgi likened the situation to computer troubleshooting. Often you don’t recognize at first that something is wrong with your computer. And when you do, finding the solution is hit or miss. “It is the same with our cells,” she said. “They do not always realize there is a problem, or know how…

In a heartwarming and inspiring turn of events, four students from the Technion’s Master’s of Industrial Design program teamed up with Shani’s mother to find a solution. They created an award-winning device that enables Shani to draw and eat independently for the first time in her life. “The importance of the device to Shani and the change it has made…

The prize was awarded to the team members for the development of a compact portable defibrillator, which is inexpensive and easy to use. Two teams took second place: BrainSense, which developed a system that monitors stroke events by identifying changes in brain activity and whose members are Technion…
Researchers at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, in collaboration with researchers from Le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Toulouse, France, discovered an artificial molecule that may inhibit the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The molecule breaks down the toxic chemical complex Cu–Aβ, inhibiting the cell death that is thought to be related to Alzheimer’s. The study was led by Professor Galia Maayan and doctoral student Anastasia Behar from the Schulich Faculty of Chemistry, in collaboration with Professor Christelle Hureau from the Laboratoire de Chimie de Coordination du CNRS.
Technion – Israel Institute of Technology Assistant Professor Assaf Zinger and Dr. Caroline Cvetkovic from the Center for Neuroregeneration at the Houston Methodist Research Institute have created a novel means of delivering medicine to neurons in a targeted manner. The biomimetic nano-vesicles, or nature-mimicking, nanometer-scale “vehicles,” are capable of specifically targeting neurons such as nerve cells. These nano-vehicles pave the way for the treatment of multiple neurodegenerative diseases and traumatic brain injuries.
Much about the inner workings of the brain remains a puzzle, even after years of progress in brain research. Now Technion researchers are putting together the pieces, with a focus on understanding the inner workings of the brain and treating neurodegenerative diseases. Hear Technion experts from the Allen and Jewel Prince Center for Neurodegenerative Disorders […]
