The Technion Shines in World Rankings: Top 100 in Shanghai Rankings in Six Fields
The Technion has once again proven its global leadership in science and technology. The University ranked among the world’s top 100 institutions in six key academic disciplines and secured the #1 position in Israel in 16 research areas, including, for the first time, artificial intelligence, according to the newly released 2025 Shanghai Ranking of Academic Subjects.
The recognition came just months after the Technion was named one of the top 100 universities in the world by the general Shanghai Ranking index, considered the leading rating of higher education institutions. The Technion has received this honor every year for more than a decade. Taken together, the ratings underscore the Technion’s influence not only as a center of academic excellence, but as a driver of innovation that impacts industry, security, and everyday life in Israel and around the world.
“The Technion competes successfully on the global stage with universities that are much older, larger, and richer,” said Technion President Prof. Uri Sivan. “Israeli academia faces many challenges and hostilities,” he said, “yet the Technion remains strong and determined to continue on the path of excellence. The Technion plays a crucial role in rebuilding the State of Israel.”
The subject-based rankings placed the Technion among the world’s top 100 in:
Israel’s only academic center for aerospace engineering, the Technion has long had a sterling reputation in the field. Its new ranking shows how that reputation has spread globally, as the Technion has now surpassed highly esteemed universities such as Stanford.

In addition to the disciplines mentioned above, the subject-based rankings position the Technion as the leading university in Israel in 16 research areas: water resources, food science and engineering, materials science and engineering, nanoscience and nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, and more — including artificial intelligence. AI was included in the ranking for the first time this year. Technion researchers have made incredible achievements using AI to improve detection of cancer and heart disease, accelerate drug discovery, develop autonomous systems for use in agriculture, and more.
These results reflect sustained excellence across a variety of disciplines and a research environment that translates scientific discovery into real-world solutions.
