The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Prof. Marcelle Machluf joined ATS board members and supporters at the Fall National Board Meeting in Chicago and discussed pioneering research in the Technion’s Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Engineering, the only one in Israel, and the Carasso FoodTech Innovation Center. Researchers at the Technion are developing high-protein food alternatives such as milk produced without cows, honey without bees, and falafels made from seaweed, as well as food packaging that is biodegradable and will keep food fresher longer. In November 2022, Prof. Machluf also launched Meatafora. The foodtech startup grows meat directly from animal cells in a scalable, affordable, and…
Imagine restaurant menus with selected dishes for men and others exclusively for women, or supermarket products categorized by gender. Looking even further into the future, what about designer 3D cultivated steaks that are male- or female-specific? Using simulated digestive systems, Technion scientists have identified differences in the way men and women digest food that could help tailor healthier food solutions by gender. The study, published recently in Food Hydrocolloids, was prompted by research recognizing that some medications are more effective in treating a specific gender, and that the same drug can have different side effects in men versus women. “We…

Pictured above: Graphic rendition on skin adhesive sensors for tuberculosis from Technion Israel Detection There is a vaccination that prevents it, and drugs that can kill it. Yet tuberculosis, colloquially known as consumption, is still prevalent and deadly. In 2019, tuberculosis infected an estimated 10 million people globally, killing 1.4 million — 95% of cases occurring in the developing world. One reason TB is still with us is delayed diagnosis. Early symptoms are non-specific, and existing TB testing is slow and often too complex and expensive for facilities with limited resources. Therefore, some 3 million cases are missed each year,…
