The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
The Technion has long been a trailblazer in promoting women in science and engineering. In 1924, when academia was largely closed off to women, the Technion’s first class of 17 students included one female. Today, 44% of Technion doctoral students are women, and female faculty and alumni are developing technologies and launching startups across all […]
Using innovative 3D printing technology, scientists from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology had been able to help amputee children by creating prosthetic hands for them, an info-video revealed on Sunday. The children are involved in the design of the artificial hand and often view it in comic-book heroes’ terms such as Iron Man’s hand or Superman’s hand. The finished prosthetic is able to hold lightweight objects and provide the children a better sense of balance. The most immediate benefit is psychological, as the children no longer feel that their amputation makes them unusual and instead have a “cool bionic hand”…
Technion Webinar Technion scientists played a key role in the fight against COVID-19, developing everything from diagnostic testing and protective gear to innovative therapeutics. In this informative webinar, Technion Professor Moran Bercovici discusses how his microfluidics research could lead to point-of-care testing to detect the coronavirus. Prof. Bercovici and his team have developed methods for […]
Technion students and researchers are providing new hope for amputee children. Students from the Biorobotics and Biomechanics Lab in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, led by Prof. Alon Wolf — together with the nonprofit organization Haifa3D — are making 3D-printed prosthetic hands for children. While prosthetics are often prohibitively expensive, these limbs are given for […]
Technion Webinar If the coronavirus pandemic has underscored one message, it’s that the world is one big global village. We can no longer work in our own silos when stock market fluctuations, climate change, and pandemics affect us all. In this special webinar, Technion alumnus Dr. Eyal Zimlichman addresses this interconnectedness and Israel’s efforts in […]
ATS – Southern California Virtual Event Featuring Arielle Fischer ’11, Ph.D. ’16, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering and Zuckerman Faculty Scholar In this interactive virtual event for the ATS – Southern California community, Asst. Prof. Fischer shares her personal and academic journey since she last visited ATS supporters as a doctoral student. As a newly minted Technion faculty member, she’ll talk about her work to create biomedical applications, including high-tech sensors and smart wearable devices for artificial joints and neuromuscular disorders. Arielle Fischer is the embodiment of excellence. As a young soldier in the Israeli Air Force,…
Smell is a primary human sense, key to our survival. Like a super-sensitive human nose, an experimental technology can “smell” and identify the chemical composition of a person’s breath and then diagnose up to 17 potential diseases, according to the scientists who developed it. These researchers, led by Hossam Haick of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, say their Na-Nose, which uses nanorays to analyze breath, can identify Parkinson’s disease, various cancers, kidney failure, multiple sclerosis and Crohn’s disease with 86% accuracy. “I would say our technology in many cases (is) equivalent to the accuracy of the currently available…
Compelling philanthropic initiatives often sound simple. End child hunger. Educate all people. Spread clean water access. Help earthquake victims. Improve health care. Cure cancer. But these bold objectives are not simple. These are big, complex ideas requiring tremendous resources that research universities are often best equipped to harness. Philanthropy is one of the key resources needed. We at ATS don’t actually execute these initiatives — but we play the critical role of translating the big ideas into action by connecting the diverse and sometimes disparate groups of people who can accomplish these far-reaching goals together. In other words, we don’t…
