The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
What if diagnosing cancer, Parkinson’s disease, or other serious illnesses could be as simple as breathing into a handheld device? That possibility is moving closer to reality thanks to the work of the Technion’s Prof. Hossam Haick, whose groundbreaking research is changing how diseases are detected around the world. In recognition of his extraordinary achievements, […]
Every year, the European Research Council (ERC) identifies some of the world’s most promising early-career researchers and gives them the freedom to pursue bold ideas. This year, two of those ideas came from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. From cancer research to artificial intelligence (AI), breakthroughs that shape the future often begin with […]
Three Technion – Israel Institute of Technology faculty members have been awarded research grants from the Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF), a fund dedicated to turning cancer into a manageable chronic disease by supporting Israeli cancer researchers until it can be eradicated. Professor Irit Ben Aharon received a Research Professorship grant to support her research […]
A Technion – Israel Institute of Technology – led research team has received a Gray Foundation Team Science grant to develop an artificial intelligence-powered MRI method aimed at improving early detection of ovarian cancer, particularly among women with inherited BRCA gene mutations. The project, led by Prof. Moti Freiman of the Technion Faculty of Biomedical Engineering and the May-Blum-Dahl Technion Human MRI Research Center, was selected as part of the Gray Foundation’s latest $35 million funding round for research focused on preventing, intercepting and detecting BRCA-related cancers at earlier stages. The research brings together teams from the Technion, the University…
A study published in Oncogene presents an innovative strategy for the particularly complex medical challenge of destroying aggressive, treatment-resistant tumors. The research was jointly led by early-career scientists Dr. Avital Oknin Vaisman and Dr. Deepanjan Panda from the laboratories of Prof. Amir Orian, head of the Rappaport Center for Cancer Research at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, and a faculty member in the Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, and Prof. Ashraf Brik of the Schulich Faculty of Chemistry. Aggressive cancers such as bone tumors (sarcomas) and melanoma that do not respond to molecular therapies have very…
A group of researchers from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, and the United States has reported a breakthrough in MRI scanning that could significantly improve breast cancer diagnosis, according to a paper published in Nature Communications. The researchers developed a new method, called ELITE, that accelerates and enhances MRI scans used in breast cancer imaging, a disease diagnosed in approximately 2.3 million people each year, most of them women. The approach combines artificial intelligence with advanced mathematical modeling to enable dynamic MRI imaging at what the researchers describe as unprecedented speed and accuracy. The international study brings together…
An innovative technology developed by researchers at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology could lead to a fundamental shift in the cancer treatment paradigm. They created advanced nanoparticles that successfully halt aggressive triple-negative breast cancer tumors – without releasing a single drug molecule. The particles operate through a sophisticated interaction with the immune system, changing the rules of the game by delivering a biological message to the tumor microenvironment and to immune system cells. Published in ACS Nano, the study was led by Ph.D. candidate Ofri Vizenblit, with the assistance of Ph.D. candidate Rawan Mhajne, under the supervision of…
Consider pancreatic cancer – the disease that killed Steve Jobs, e.g., despite the best medical technology money could buy. Approximately 467,000 to 500,000 people die from pancreatic cancer worldwide each year. It is the sixth most common cause of cancer death globally. Due to its high mortality rate and lack of early detection, the number of deaths is projected to rise significantly in the coming decades. And no new drug to treat it has gained FDA approval – for 30 years! Moreover, survival rates are bleak: Metastatic (Stage IV): 3–6 months, though recent advancements may improve this. Locally Advanced (Stage…
Researchers at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model designed to help guide whether to administer chemotherapy directly after tumor resection in breast cancer patients. The model, which uses high-resolution images from hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained tumor samples collected at the time of diagnosis, predicts both the risk of cancer recurrence and the likelihood that a patient will benefit from chemotherapy. The research, published in The Lancet Oncology, identifies patterns and signals in the tumor that might otherwise escape detection. “These are complex biological signals that the human eye cannot consistently quantify,” said…
At the Zimin Institute for AI Solutions in Health Care, innovation meets impact. Founded in 2022 through a partnership between the Zimin Foundation and the Technion’s Tech.AI.BioMed arm, the institute supports transformative research that applies artificial intelligence to real-world medical challenges. From diagnostics to drug discovery and patient care, AI is redefining what’s possible in […]
Led by a repeat founder and a world-renowned robotics pioneer, the Israeli startup EndoCure has developed a robotic platform capable of producing 3D images with 10 times the density of an MRI. “Current imaging methods, MRI, CT, and manual ultrasound, often fail to detect small or deep tumors, are highly operator-dependent, and are either expensive, invasive, or inconsistent,” says EndoCure. “This creates major gaps in diagnosis, delays in treatment, unnecessary surgeries, and poor patient outcomes.” Founded in 2023 by Dr. Hadas Ziso, a repeat founder with 20 years of MedTech experience, and Prof. Moshe Shoham, a robotics pioneer who was…
