The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Whether lured by Stanford University, tech startups, or California sunshine and cypress trees, many Israelis living in the U.S. have made Silicon Valley a second home. By some estimates, there are upwards of 2,000 Technion alumni in Silicon Valley, many holding senior positions in engineering, operations management, and investment management. “They are making a significant […]
Technion scientists have produced a highly stretchable electronic material and a wearable sensor capable of precisely identifying bending and twisting motion. Together, they form an electronic “skin” capable of recognizing the range of movement human joints normally make, with up to half a degree precision. This breakthrough is the result of collaborative work between researchers from the Laboratory for Nanomaterial-Based Devices, headed by Professor Hossam Haick from the Wolfson Faculty of Chemical Engineering. The results were recently published in Advanced Materials and featured on the journal’s cover.
Technion students don’t wait until graduation to make an impact on the world. Students from the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering recently showed off an array of initiatives from a tool that can detect cardiovascular disease to ingenious ways to fight COVID-19 — intriguing and lifesaving projects that could change the world.
Pictured above: Technion alumnus Dr. Andrei Broder Technion alumnus Andrei Broder was recently awarded the Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The peer-selected award honors specific theoretical accomplishments that have had a significant and demonstrable effect on the practice of computing. Dr. Broder, along with his colleagues Yossi Azar, Anna Karlin, Michael Mitzenmacher, and Eli Upfal, were recognized for their Balanced Allocations framework, also known as the power of two choices, and their extensive applications to practice. By way of illustrating the Balanced Allocations framework, imagine you and a few friends are tossing…
H2OLL, an innovative Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG) technology developed at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, has won the prestigious Water Europe Innovation Award for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). More than 10% of the world’s population — over 670 million people — presently have no access to clean drinking water, impacting public health, education, and gender equality. It’s why access to water is a critical part of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: clean water means better health and well-being, a healthier climate, a stronger education system. It even has implications for gender equality, as in many places…
Meteoric progress has been made in the world of deep learning and artificial intelligence. Yet there are virtually no medical products on the market that tap into AI’s life-changing potential. Until now. Professor Yael Yaniv of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering joined forces with the research groups of Professors Alex Bronstein and Assaf Schuster of the Henry and Marilyn Taub Faculty of Computer Science to develop an AI-based system that analyzes electrocardiograms (ECGs) and automatically detects heart disease. The electrocardiogram, developed more than a century ago, provides important information on conditions affecting the heart. It is a quick and non-invasive…
Modern-day Israel was built by hardworking pioneers, people like Avraham Ashkenazi ’66, M.S. ’72. Fleeing war-torn Europe, he studied engineering at the Technion and forged the nation’s infrastructure and industry. After a successful career in Israel, Iran, and the U.S., Mr. Ashkenazi can now pull back — and give back. He and his late wife Patricia have contributed to numerous causes, including Friends of the IDF, Jewish Film Festival, Israel Guide Dog Center, Chabad Beth El, and other synagogues in Hampton Roads, Va., near his home in Norfolk. But the American Technion Society holds a special allure. “The Technion is…
Relive this inspiring discussion with three Berger Visiting Fellows who are stellar female students poised to become the influential scientists and entrepreneurs of tomorrow. One has already made advances combating antimicrobial resistance and is now researching treatments for Alzheimer’s. Another has worked in the aerospace industry, and her research involves building a rocket. You’ll get […]
Technion researchers are accustomed to receiving awards for complex science breakthroughs conducted in their labs. Now they can claim a little piece of Hollywood. Technion alumni have received an Oscar and an Emmy — announced recently within the span of 10 days. Global video software company Beamr, whose technological leaders are graduates of the Technion’s Andrew and Erna Viterbi Faculty of Electrical Engineering, won a 2021 Technology and Engineering Emmy® Award for Development of Perceptual Metrics for Video Encoding Optimization. “It’s amazing,” said Technion alumna Tamar Shoham M.Sc. ’09. “I often encounter glossy looks when I say I’m an engineer…
Lead Researcher for New Space Missions and a Candidate for the Astronaut Selection Program The Netflix space drama Away follows the perils of a fictional expedition to Mars while gradually revealing the personal odysseys of its crew members. Listen to alumnus Eliad Peretz ’13 explore the challenges that instilled him with the right stuff to launch […]
Often referred to as a mini-NASA, the Technion Faculty of Aerospace Engineering is the only department of its kind in Israel and has trained most of the nation’s rocket scientists. Its researchers are involved in Israel’s priority space projects and have played an outsized role in building Israel’s aerospace industry. In this webinar, Aerospace Engineering […]
