Big Breakthrough in Alzheimer’s Research

November 19, 2021

Researchers at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, in collaboration with researchers from Le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Toulouse, France, discovered an artificial molecule that may inhibit the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The molecule breaks down the toxic chemical complex Cu–Aβ, inhibiting the cell death that is thought to be related to Alzheimer’s. The study was led by Professor Galia Maayan and doctoral student Anastasia Behar from the Schulich Faculty of Chemistry, in collaboration with Professor Christelle Hureau from the Laboratoire de Chimie de Coordination du CNRS.

Algorithm Helps Doctors Personalize Antibiotics

November 19, 2021

A new algorithm developed by the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology helps doctors select more effective, personalized antibiotic treatments for patients. After doctors at Maccabi Healthcare Services adopted the algorithm for patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs), they saw a 35% drop in the need to switch a patient’s antibiotic regimen. Maccabi first applied the algorithm to patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs) – the most common bacterial infection among women. Around 30% of women suffer from UTIs at least once during their lifetimes, and up to 10% experience recurrent infections. Until now, in most cases general treatment has…

Changing Manufacturing Forever

November 17, 2021

Every day, manufacturing companies face costly equipment failures. What if they could detect that leaky valve before it leaked? Alumni-founded Feelit Technologies Ltd. predicts and solves machinery problems before they happen — preventing potentially dangerous equipment failures and reducing the cost of manual inspections and production downtime associated with finding and fixing faults. Feelit technology is based on sensor-packed stickers printed with nanoparticle ink. When affixed to pipes, pumps, or valves, the sensors monitor pressure, temperature, vibration, leakage, wall integrity, thickness, and other industrial parameters. The data is then analyzed in the cloud in real time and sent back to…

Your Brain Remembers Illness

November 15, 2021

A friend calls with the news she was just diagnosed with COVID-19. You had dinner with her last night, and suddenly you start coughing, feel flu-like symptoms, and your fever spikes. What’s going on? Are you coming down with the virus or are your symptoms psychosomatic? You test negative. Yet Technion Associate Professor Asya Rolls […]

Algorithm in Service of Architecture

November 09, 2021

Pictured Above / Prof. Mirela Ben-Chen To anyone who’s seen videos of robotic arms in motion, lifting and interlocking parts in construction, it’s clear that computer science has everyday applications. In fact, the use of increasingly sophisticated robots in architectural design and manufacturing is seen as a major technological trend in the construction industry. But while complex architectural projects are often planned on computers, they are executed using construction methods that have remained virtually unchanged for decades. Human intervention is usually necessary, especially when architectural planning is based on complex spatial systems such as thin, doubly curved surfaces, known as…

Tiny “Taxis” Target the Brain

October 29, 2021

Technion – Israel Institute of Technology Assistant Professor Assaf Zinger and Dr. Caroline Cvetkovic from the Center for Neuroregeneration at the Houston Methodist Research Institute have created a novel means of delivering medicine to neurons in a targeted manner. The biomimetic nano-vesicles, or nature-mimicking, nanometer-scale “vehicles,” are capable of specifically targeting neurons such as nerve cells. These nano-vehicles pave the way for the treatment of multiple neurodegenerative diseases and traumatic brain injuries.

Diabetes Cure? One Shot, Months of Results

October 28, 2021

Pictured above: Professor Shulamit Levenberg (Left) and Ph.D. student Rita Beckerman The Technion has developed a novel approach to treat type 2 diabetes. Led by Professor Shulamit Levenberg and Ph.D. student Rita Beckerman, the treatment uses an autograft of muscle cells engineered to take in sugar at increased rates. Mice treated in this manner displayed normal blood sugar levels for months after a single procedure. Prof. Levenberg is the director of the Rina & Avner Schneur Center for Diabetes Research and the Technion Center for 3D Bioprinting, and holds the Stanley and Sylvia Shirvan Chair in Cancer and Life Sciences…

Nervous System Holds Key to Beating Cancer

October 21, 2021

If the nervous system can help tumors grow, can it also do the reverse? Technion scientists had this in mind when they developed an innovative treatment for breast cancer based on targeting the nervous system with analgesic nanoparticles.

German Chancellor Merkel Honored

October 13, 2021

German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel, popular in Israel for her unwavering support for the Jewish nation, received an honorary doctorate from the Technion in Jerusalem on October 10 during her farewell visit to Israel. Chancellor Merkel will not seek a fifth term as chancellor after serving for 16 years. “I am proud to receive the honorary degree from the Technion as a scientist and not just as a politician,” said Dr. Merkel, who holds a doctorate in the natural sciences from the German Academy of Science in Berlin. “Israel was founded on a vision that was as scientific — technological…

Cell Aging – Reversed?

October 07, 2021

Scientists from the Technion have found a way to rejuvenate the aging process of the body’s immune system. Professor Doron Melamed, principal investigator in the Richard and Kenneth Skodnek Developmental Immunology and Aging Research Laboratory, and doctoral student Reem Dowery sought to understand why the elderly population is more susceptible to severe cases of COVID-19 and why the vaccines seem to be less effective and wane faster among this population. The results of their work were published recently in the peer-reviewed, online medical journal Blood. The secret begins with B cells, also known as B lymphocytes, which protect us from…

DiCaprio Backs Lab-Grown Meat Startup

October 04, 2021

Professor Shulamit Levenberg’s work in cultivated meat has caught the eye of one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors: Leonardo DiCaprio. The actor and environmental activist recently invested an undisclosed sum in Prof. Levenberg’s Aleph Farms as part of the startup’s recent $105 million funding round. “One of the most impactful ways to combat the climate crisis is to transform our food system,” said DiCaprio, who has funded an array of environmental causes including lion recovery and is part of the billionaire-funded nonprofit Earth Alliance. He will become an advisor and investor to both Aleph Farms, which cultivates eco-friendly steak from…
