The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Imagine a future where technology allows us not only to see and hear each other from great distances but also to feel – examining a sick patient or tucking in a grandchild from across the globe. Techion Professor Lihi Zelnik-Manor is on a mission to hone technologies that will realize these possibilities. “I love thinking about […]
The next century will see a global health revolution driven by ubiquitous access to advanced noninvasive diagnostic tools that enable real-time monitoring and early detection of diseases for billions of people across the globe. Nanorobots could revolutionize medicine and surgery by traversing the human body to conduct repairs and administer targeted treatments. Detecting Disease Before […]
In the next 100 years — and even in the next three to four years — there will be a huge advance in what we call alternative proteins. Rethinking What We Eat Instead of what we see in science fiction, where we’re flying into space and eating a bunch of pills, I think we will […]
The next 100 years in my field of bio-inspired engineering will be focused on early detection of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Right now, we might have the ability to treat cancer and we might have the ability to reduce the side effects — but can we detect it early, before it causes any harmful symptoms […]
Frankly, I think 100 years is too far to look into the future because we will see dramatic new scientific areas emerge 20 years from now. My grandfather immigrated to Israel in 1946 from Holland to be a Technion student in civil engineering. At that time, civil engineering and mechanical engineering were the most prestigious […]
Researchers have come up with another way to mix biology and construction, and it’s changing how we design and build sustainable structures. Scientists at Technion – Israel Institute of Technology developed a material made from sand and bacteria that can repair small cracks on its own, extend the lifespan of buildings, and reduce maintenance needs. This process also cuts waste and lowers the environmental impact of construction. According to SciTechDaily, the key is cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, which use photosynthesis to produce the common mineral calcium carbonate. When added to sand-based mixtures, they create a curable material that strengthens itself…
Food recalls take place when regulatory bodies and/or food manufacturers deem food unsafe to eat due to contamination or mislabeling of ingredients. Over the past few years, more recall notices have popped up in the news. This is more than the American public has seen before, and they have caused much alarm. Some of the most recent ones involve cheese potentially contaminated with listeria, heat-damaged milk that may spoil early and pet food potentially contaminated with Salmonella. While it might be concerning that there are more recalls announced now, the more you know about them can help you stay prepared…
In an exciting collaboration, award-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and Warner Bros. are set to bring the extraordinary life of Al Schwimmer to the big screen. Schwimmer, an American World War II veteran, is celebrated as the father of the Israeli Air Force and the founder of Israel Aerospace Industries. His daring efforts in 1948 to […]
Israeli space company SpaceIL signed an agreement with the United Arab Emirates to cooperate on a joint mission to the moon in 2024, according to the Technion UK. The mission, called Beresheet 2 in a reference to the Book of Genesis, is one of many new collaborations between the two countries following the signing of the Abraham Accords normalization agreement. It follows the original Beresheet spacecraft launch in 2019, which failed when the craft crash-landed. SpaceIL called the Beresheet 2 mission “the first scientific-technological project to create a common history for the two peoples: the flags of Israel and the…
The first test flight of Blue Origin’s huge New Glenn rocket could have major implications for long-term economics of the space industry, say experts. The launch marked a major milestone for Blue Origin, which was started by Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos in 2000. While the company’s New Shepard spacecraft has made multiple launches, sending space tourists to the edge of space, New Glenn takes Blue Origin into the new territory of orbital space missions. Taller than the Statue of Liberty at more than 320 feet tall, New Glenn is one of the largest space vehicles ever built. By comparison, NASA’s…
Radio frequency (RF) signals are a cornerstone of modern technology, enabling wireless communication, data transfer and sensing applications across a wide range of fields and tasks. A Cornell Tech-led research group is in the early stages of developing a portable, inexpensive device that uses radio frequency signals and machine learning for another important job: measuring lead contamination levels in soil. The lab of Rajalakshmi Nandakumar, assistant professor at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech, has developed SoilScanner, which sends radio waves of different frequencies from an RF transmitter, through a soil sample to an RF receiver, which reveals the…
With so many accolades across a variety of disciplines, the Technion’s sheer brilliance can sometimes be overwhelming. That’s why, given the current conflict in Israel, I thought it prudent to focus on the vital role the Israel Institute of Technology has always played in the country’s defence systems, ensuring its safe and secure future. Established a quarter of a century before Israel became an independent nation, the Technion has been inexorably linked to the country’s security since its inception. Of course, the most obvious examples are those alumni who continue to lead teams that develop missile defense systems, underground tunnel…
