The Future of Biomedicine and Food Tech

An ATS – Southern California Virtual Program

Featuring Professor Shulamit Levenberg

Former Dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering
Director of the Technion Center for 3D Bioprinting
Director of the Rina & Avner Schneur Center for Diabetes Research

Relive this fascinating discussion with Technion superstar Professor Shulamit Levenberg, whose work has left its mark in several different disciplines. A world-renowned expert on tissue engineering, Prof. Levenberg discussed advances in regenerative medicine and what they mean for future healthcare. She also touched on her novel research in the fight against diabetes and her groundbreaking 3D printed steak from food-tech startup, Aleph Farms. The startup has created quite a buzz and is particularly relevant in the era of looming global food shortages and environmental challenges.

The Faculty of Biomedical Engineering is the largest and oldest in the State of Israel and will play a key role in reshaping the world of medicine and healthcare. Don’t miss this chance to hear about Prof. Levenberg’s critical research.

About the Speaker

Professor Shulamit Levenberg is the former dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering at the Technion and holds the Stanley and Sylvia Shirvan Chair in Cancer and Life Sciences. She also heads the Rina & Avner Schneur Center for Diabetes Research, and the Technion Center for 3D Bioprinting she launched in March 2019.

Her interdisciplinary research on stem cells and tissue engineering has led to breakthroughs in creating complex tissues such as blood vessels in the lab and has demonstrated that they can successfully integrate with the host during implantation.

Prof. Levenberg received the Krill Prize for Excellence in Scientific Research, awarded by the Wolf Foundation, and was named by Scientific American as a “Research Leader” in tissue engineering for her seminal work on vascularization of engineered tissues. She also received the France-Israel Foundation Prize, the Italian Excellence for Israel Prize, the Teva Founders Prize and Research Grant and the Juludan Research Prize. In 2018, she received the Rappaport Prize for Excellence in Biomedical Sciences and in 2019 received the Michael Bruno Memorial Award.

She is founder and Chief Scientific Officer of two start-up companies, including Aleph Farms, which is revolutionizing the food industry by producing real meat from cow cells without damaging the environment. She is a member of the Israel National Council for Bioethics and is actively involved in training young scientists.

Prof. Levenberg earned her bachelor’s degree at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, her Ph.D. at the Weizmann Institute of Science, and conducted post-doctoral research at MIT before joining the Technion in 2009.
