The Technion’s story has been intertwined with Israel’s for more than a century, from laying the foundations for a new nation to shaping its future.
Parkinson’s disease is a complex, progressive neurological disorder affecting up to 10 million people worldwide. Probably caused by clumps of alpha-synuclein protein that damage dopamine-producing cells governing motor control, Parkinson’s is characterized by tremor, rigidity, poor posture and slow movement. About 150 Israeli startups are developing technologies to help prevent, stop or even cure Parkinson’s. Azilect (rasagiline), one of the most successful drugs for managing Parkinson’s symptoms, was developed in Israel by Prof. Moussa Youdim and is manufactured by Teva Pharmaceuticals.
Don’t sleep on this warning. A sleep scientist has revealed the most commonly overlooked symptom of the dangerous sleep disorder that affects millions of Americans — urging them to pay closer attention to the quality of their nightly shuteye. “Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an extremely common condition, impacting hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Yet, millions suffer in silence because common symptoms of OSA may be overlooked or difficult to detect because they occur during sleep,” sleep scientist Dr. Joachim Behar told The Post. OSA occurs when the throat muscles relax and block the airway repeatedly during sleep.
Several years ago, amateur athlete Hemi Re’em was shocked to discover that his coronary arteries were 90 percent blocked despite his seemingly good health. This set him on a path to cofounding Yopi Technologies. Yopi (Your Online Personal Instructor) is a first-of-its-kind, AI-based wearable device that monitors oxygen consumption through electrolytes in the sweat. The goal is to detect heart deterioration and measure overall wellness.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects an estimated 10% of the world, which is just under 800 million people. According to the US-based National Kidney Foundation, 90% of people affected by the disease don’t know they have it at the early stages, allowing it to progress undetected. In some cases, CKD is caught only at “end stage,” when kidneys are failing and require either a transplant or dialysis — a grueling, weekly procedure to remove waste and excess fluid from the blood. The average survival rate of dialysis patients is five years. Curespec, based in Yehud-Monosson in Israel, claims its unique device, Nephrospec,…
A new approach that integrates a minimally invasive, painless microneedle platform may help monitor protein biomarkers in responses to a combination immunotherapy against melanoma. The platform is capable of absorbing the cell-surrounding, biomarker-containing fluid from deeper layers of the skin with an ultra-sensitive, single-molecule detection method (Simoa) that detects often rare, yet relevant biomarkers with higher sensitivity than conventional methods. The researchers provided proof-of-concept for their approach in a mouse melanoma model in which they treated cancerous lesions with a novel therapy. The therapy acts locally on tumor lesions in that it combines non-invasive focused ultrasound (FUS), which generates heat…
Imagine this: One day you wake up to find the steering wheel that had been on one car in your garage is now on your other car, and the parking brakes are also interchanged. According to research conducted by Professor Noam Ziv, something very similar is happening in our brains, because the parts that make up our synapses are constantly moving. This brain research, which could have implications for memory loss and aging, is just one of the many exciting projects underway in the new Technion Human Health Initiative (THHI), headed by Prof. Ziv. As the global population skews older,…
An Israeli startup has developed a wearable device that can predict the likelihood of an imminent stroke through changes in the carotid artery’s blood flow, potentially helping early intervention and preventing disablity. Strokes are most commonly caused by a clot blocking the essential supply of blood to the brain, and according to the World Health Organization are the second leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability across the globe. Over 100 million people have experienced a stroke worldwide, with one in four adults experiencing one in their lifetime. And for 50 percent of them, that means some form of…
When serial medical device inventor Dvir Keren became interested in developing a minimally invasive way to fill in bald areas caused by androgenetic alopecia — common in both men and women — he did not realize he’d be establishing a femtech company. But that’s what Hairstetics became, for the simple reason that 85 percent of women with androgenetic alopecia are not benefiting from natural hair transplantation procedures for what is called “male-pattern baldness” in men. “At the beginning, he was thinking about males,” says Hairstetics CEO Oren Ne’eman. “But when recruitment for clinical studies started, a lot of women came.” Keren learned that androgenetic alopecia in…
The weight-loss market is, pun perhaps intended, huge. Recent years have seen the advancement of dieting drugs, but many of these include painful injections and a whole slew of side effects. An Israeli startup, meanwhile, enables people interested in losing a moderate amount of weight to take a pill that leaves them feeling full without drugs. “The idea was to develop a product that can be swallowed through the mouth and which opens up in the stomach to apply pressure on the stomach wall and so produce a feeling of satiety,” Epitomee CEO Dr. Dan Hashimshony tells ISRAEL21c. “That’s something that’s easy…
The world’s smallest heart pump, which was developed by an Israeli startup, is now being used in the treatment of two heart patients in New York as part of an FDA-approved study. The study is the first step to securing approval for the use of Magenta Medical’s Elevate heart pump in the US. It will evaluate the device’s safety and feasibility in providing temporary support during procedures used to open clogged arteries in the heart. The Elevate pump can support the heart’s activity, and even temporarily replace the organ for several days by opening clogged arteries of cardiac patients, and reducing…
How agile are your fingers? Finger dexterity is a highly developed human skill that is vital for a huge range of activities including eating with a knife and fork, tying shoelaces, typing and playing musical instruments. This ability is based not only on the unique anatomy of the human hand, but also on complex brain capabilities. The brain controls finger dexterity via intricate mechanisms that have long challenged scientists in various fields. Now, a study conducted at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa sheds light on this subject and, according to the researchers, is likely to lead to the…
Physical therapy exercises are crucial for properly recovering and healing from an injury. They are especially important for seniors who may have a longer road of recovery or need to regain mobility in order to take care of themselves. To help encourage patients to keep up with their exercises, startup BoBo Balance – led in part by company Co-founder and CMO and Technion alumnus Yair Agami – has transformed physical therapy into an interactive video game that allows users to earn points as they complete their regimen. Users can perform their exercises using a wearable movement sensor or on a…
